I wonder if GM will use the cars electronics to verify what happened?

It most certainly still does... Man Up and Grow a Pair! Especially at speed it turns fine with muscle. ( yes not like before but it still turns, it's a mechanical linkage the same as any other hydrolic pr electric power steering car). The op was going 25 mph, and couldn't muscle the car with manual steering and the residual hydrolic brakes to stop? He said he was a big guy. Maybe all his muscle is in his legs and he has the arms of a pre teen girl? How can this happen? I call BS on the whole story. On top of trying to scam GM he damaged property and left the scene of an accident. The whole thing is so illogical, it sounds like April fools day!

since you have $ to repair it, don't count on GM to fix it for you(especially since you didn't take it in for the recall).

I'm 5'8" and I would think it'd be easier to hit the key with my knee but with the way I sit; seat pushed back so I my knees aren't fully extended when fully depressing the pedals, and the steering is pulled back enough to have maybe 45deg. when my hands are at 10/2. and high enough that I can see all the gauges clearly with no cutoff ... I still can't hit the key 'cos the steering wheel comes in the way of my thigh and it still puts my knee a good 4-5 inches away.

Maybe you taller drivers have the steering lifted all the way up? and pulled closer to you? that's the only way I see the key being open to a knee-jerk reaction <--- see what I did there?

To the OP..
Give some thought to learning to drive a little more "stretched out". (The video appears you are quite forward)
Cars are not designed to have the drivers legs that bent and "skrunched".
In a front end collision you can cause severe damage not only to your knees/legs, but you can completely destroy your hips/back and possibly cause internal injuries that could be life threatening. Seen this more than once.

I've not received the recall notice yet either (2013 purchased new Aug 2014 as a leftover from a Chevy Dealer) I will be taking taking the car out to a parking lot and seeing how hard the steering is when the electric pump isn't working. Never really thought about it, thanx for the heads up.

OP,

I hope you're keeping your integrity from being a Marine. Unfortunately, many people claim military service to somehow gain some credibility. But there has been many a prior service member who used it to get restitution, then find out they were dishonorably discharged for smoking pot.

However, if you are sincere, I am glad you are okay and thankfully were going at a moderate speed. Sorry to hear it had to happen.

Initially, I thought maybe you were trying to test it out while driving and it actually worked ( well, didn't work) and panicked and crashed. As a marine I'm sure you'd know how to keep a cool head when things get hot..

Glad to see you're okay though Op, but there's a lt of scammers out there, and if you aren't one of them, great.

This happened to me while I was driving my girlfriends 2006 chevy cobalt on the highway. It was very very scary, and we were lucky not to be hit by any other cars. Fortunately for us we were in the HOV lane and no cars we're behind us, otherwise I don't even want to imagine what could've happened

I read the thread, and I'll choose to ignore most of the posts I saw out of ignorance (mostly theirs, and some of my own).

My question is: Why would your car turning off have any effect on you using either of the two brakes equipped in the car?

If you mentally lost control of the car, I understand; if you think your engine shutting off prevents you from stopping the vehicle then I don't feel anything for you.
