ZL1 Rev Limit - Stock Calibration

I'd like some input on others' experience with the ZL1 rev limiter. My car is a manual transmission. I'm on my second ZL1 and am well familiar with these cars.

I swear both of my cars start tagging the rev limiter before 6000 rpm. If I'm not in the act of pulling 2nd by 5800 rpm, it will start sputtering (usually by 6000 rpm).

I've tried it in all PTM modes and with everything off. Is this usual for the stock calibration?

Stock cut off is 6200 rpm. But when stock mine looked more like 6000 on the tach.

Don't forget that the tach display may not be entirely accurate in real time. It's quite possible that the tach can't respond as fast as the engine can rev.
Perhaps by the time you see the tach hit 6000, it's really already up to 61-6200.?

After you tune and raise the rev limit, do the shift timing lights on the HUD adjust to the new limit?

Mine has always had a soft limit feel if I try to run 5th gear to the redline. And you are correct in that it is backing off somehow before the limiter setting. In the low gears it just cuts out hard but when you are up in the big gears you can see it clearly.

I was watching my tach closely in third on a drag strip and was pretty surprised when I hit the rev limiter at 6000 maybe even a touch before... was just getting ready to shift then it felt like I hit the brakes...

That's because it is set up in the tune to limit by fuel cut in 1st-4th gear then limited with ETC in 5th. And again with fuel cut in 6th, as if you could reach 6200 rpm in 6th.

Been shifting for 45 years, tachs are great but the sweet spot is the sweet spot. I can feel the spot coming and it's gonna be right about 6250-6300 !
Love the damn car but I would kill to have a 6500 rpm limiter without having to do a full, blow the warranty, tune.....frustrating.

BTW.. great info on this site, saved me a ton of time and cash, can't thank everybody enough. Speaking of warranties, some of the muscle cars I was buying new back in the day came with 90 day /3000 miles....and they gave you NO SLACK !

Dont worry about what the tach says. Listen to the engine. It will tell you when to shift.

I had my rev limiter raised on recommendation from the tuner that this is common and safe. As JED mentioned above, that 6200-6400 RPM sweet spot is fantastic. Power does start to level off above 6000 RPM but it keeps you in the power for longer allowing time for shifts. Mine is an automatic by the way. Programmed to shift at 6500 RPM. Below you can see stock limiter vs tune limiter (+CAI).

Raising the rev limiter is one of the things on my bucket list when I finally start modding. Just have to finish my 68 first.
