Need a new head unit for my SS.

I own a 1998 Camaro SS. My Alpine D855, after about 15 years of service, is starting to go. I'm in no hurry, in fact want to really research this and will probably not buy until late in the summer. I'm looking for good radio reception (one area where the 855 has always lagged), obviously a CD player, the ability to hook in my iPod (or an iPad, an iTampon, or an iPhone) to utilize the playlists I've created, higher than normal output if possible (the 855 is 4x40w), and a mono subwoofer output. So any suggestions?

You should definitely take a look at the Pioneer NEX series. Apple Carplay will be available via firmware update for the NEX models as soon as today to a few weeks time. The flagship Pioneer NEX 8000 can be purchased on Amazon for approximately $950 as compared to $1500 MSRP. The head unit comes with a capacitive screen, similar to your ipad or iphone screen.

So I'm bumping this up as I haven't received much feedback. I've been driving my SS quite a bit lately as my commuting car is in the shop, and it's frustrating to have the volume drop as the unit heats up. Also, I'm looking to spend in the range of $2-400 for a unit, not up in the 4 figure are. I had some feedback from a buddy who has a Firehawk about a 2 din unit that he had done on his car, but he needed the front bezel customized which I'm not sure I want to do.

Tried browsing a bit at a site like Crutchfield? Enter your car info and sort by the features that you want. That will at least narrow the list.
