Moose, my RJT had a tiny rock chip during transport on the hood. The Dealership is repainting entire hood next week. Should I wait 30 days before I wax again? I know the factory bakes it hot enough that you don't need to wait, but what about a paint shop like this, thoughts?
PS: Love the dog, and stop in Lincoln on your way to Grand Island and help me with my car and I'll feed you!!!

I think I'd follow your line of thinking and give it a good month to allow the paint to fully "cure" before waxing. Better safe than sorry.

Just keep it clean, and avoid adding any new chips!

Ok I'll give them a try. I've only used them as buffing towels, but I'll try to dry my car with them. I'll probably have to buy another pack.

"Avoiding swirls" ;

First "tip" - the more you touch the paint surface, re; washing, polishing, etc., the more opportunities for swirls, etc.

* ALWAYS rinse the car very well prior to washing
* ALWAYS use a clean wash mitt (sheepskin or chenile)
* ALWAYS use the proper towels for drying/polish removal (I like the "blond" towels offered by Zaino)
* ALWAYS use a good quality applicator for applying polish

* Follow the directions provided by Zaino for application and removal of Zaino
(top to bottom on sides/front to back on top body panels)
(you should not apply much pressure applying/removing polish)

* DRYING after washing
- remove spray nozzle on hose and let water sheet away during rinsing
- fold towel in half, lay on paint surface, and pull towards you, using NO pressure

* NEVER use a spray detailer if too much dust/dirt has accumulated on paint surface
* NEVER wash/dry in direct sunlight or during high temps.

Stripes;

* TAKE your time
* When washing, move sponge along edges, never across
* When applying polish, never go over edges - apply along edges

I hope those tips will be of some help. If not, please let me know.

Ed

Tip on swirls: if you don't have any, you will if you use lambs wool to buff and if you buff make sure you use a cleaner/glaze polish formulated especially for power buffing. Bottom line on buffing-screw it. You can't get any better results than doing it by hand. You risk too much if you are not good with it. Keep in mind all edges have less coating thickness than flat surfaces to when you a spinning on an edge or radius top you don't want to wear out your welcome there ie., fast pass only.

Hi!

Stripes; If you're going to Zaino the stripes, use Zaino Z-2.
Bugs; Clay will remove them. I also use 'Stoners' Bug/Tar Remover during washing.
Wheels; ABSOLUTELY! Zaino them!

Ed, I took delivery of a 2010 Camaro a few weeks ago.. Paint is Red Jewel Tin Coat. A local detail shop says I should have them put a paint sealer on soon. What are your thoughts about doing this?

Wow Ed, this thread is awesome! Much appreciated. Just one quick question. I've noticed you recommend Zaino, with good reason from all I've heard about it. But a buddy of mine who owns a local auto shop recommended the Turtle Wax ICE car polish, said it did an amazing job. So I picked it up, along with the ICE car wash. What do you think of that line?

Don't get the dealer "clear coat" protection.

I was a car salesman for ten years and the stuff is B.S. They guaranty it for 5 years but there are so many ways for them to NOT fix it if something does happen. It's just different kinds of waxes in different box's. Parma-Plate, xzylon, it's all gimmicky junk. Wax it yourself.

I always felt stupid offering that stuff to customers. "It's a clear coat for inside the vehicle! It's amazing!" Well if it's so amazing why are you offering to reupholster my car if there is a coffee stain that won't come out? How great can it be? LOL!

In a perfect world I would have the car wet sanded to get rid of GM's awful "orange peel" and throw 5 layers of clear coat on it! But for that kind of money I could just buy another camaro to tow behind my camaro. LOL!

Another great tip for feeling for inperfections in the paint: take the celephane wrapper from a pack of cigarettes and wear in on your hand like a mitten, slide your hand along the surface of the car, you will feel all of the grit and bumps that you can't feel with your bare hand. It is UNBELIEVABLE how much crap is in your paint before you clay bar it

Ok, so I've decided to go a mix on the car wash products. I really liked the Mr Clean Auto Dry wash system since it sheets the water off well (When I lived in OR we were on well water that had a TON of minerals (across from a several hundred acre farmer's field) and had VERY bad water spot problems, and the Mr Clean system worked wonderfully for a quick dry.

I also used a water blade along with it, and that I am undecided on... I would wash the car with a good mit (ordering Mother's lambskin washmit) & a clean bucket of water to rinse, using the Mr Clean to spray on soap and rinse it off, then run the waterblade to pull 99% of the water that did not sheet off leaving VERY little to dry.

Is the water blade bad if you've washed every inch of the car carefully?
