I don't know how anyone could mistake any of the big three muscle cars (Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger). They all look quite different.

To me, it's more of a running joke. The whole Ford vs Chevy thing from back in the day (when I was young, imported cars only included things like Ferrari). I have no hate for the Mustang either. I have never owned one, but have had some Ford's (Thunderbird and now my Interceptor - Crown Vic) and while it's not almighty GM (LOL), they're good cars.

Went to dinner with the wife the week I got the car. We sat in a window seat in line of sight of the car. The waitress came over and asked what kind of car it was. It was parked about 30 feet away. I told her it was a Camaro. She turned to the other 2 waitresses and said HA! I told you!!! One of them thought it was a Mustang, the other thought it was "that Dodge thing."

This happens a lot to me, more often with those people less accustomed to the car world but sometimes I'm even surprised with car people....

My coworker just came to me and said, "Boy I love your black Dodge. Is it the one vin diesel has?" meanwhile its a blue camaro.
