As a "car guy," you usually find a few independent shops that you can trust and have reasonable confidence in. They're out there, though it is true that many need to be avoided. Dealer's are not all bad, some are and some are not. If you're into cars, though, it pays in the long haul to establish a relationship with a few independents. I don't know, maybe that's not as necessary today with people who change their cars out every couple years, but when you stick with cars well past their pay off, and/or when you drive classics, even if you're a backyard mechanic... you still need a few shops you can rely on. Dealerships usually aren't it.

I'll be taking my 2LS in for a (possibly?) torque converter issue on Monday. I know for the price of ordering snow tires at the dealership, I could just order tires and wheels from tirerack and mount them myself...but I'm super paranoid about doing anything at all that could later be used to "void" any warranty claims.

I don't know who to trust (and I tend not to trust anyone, anyway).

I think installing your own snow tires won't be an issue for your warranty.

Putting a snowplow on the front of your Camaro? That might get you in hot water if you try to claim transmission issues as a result of plowing with your Camaro.

Snow tires...no big deal.

What about calibrating the TPS monitors? Is that something that can be done at home (or something I could, in theory, damage at home?).

This thread has SO much win. I'm going to pass out laughing and choke on my tears!
Clearly you didn't pay attention to who I was quoting.. He's from north Carolina, not California..

you don't buy fish at a steak restaurant, so why tires at a car dealer, how about a tire dealer who specializes in tires only.

If I recall, pre-2013 cars can be calibrated using a setting in the DIC and a simple procedure of letting air out of tires in a set order, and then refilling them.

2013+ require a calibration tool. I've got that tool on order since I do my own tire rotations and it will save me money in the long run. Plus, I have a fullsize, matching spare, that I include in the rotation.

If you destroy a sensor while calibrating it, you're doing something wrong. You're just matching the radio frequency to the car's computer to tell it which corner the tire is on.

And, if you somehow destroy a sensor (like, if you're actually doing your own mounting/balancing) they're about $30 to replace, on the expensive side. Don't sweat it.

I'm not gonna argue with you guys, everyone is entitled to there opinions.. hence what makes forums interesting imo. I enjoy working on cars, I enjoy working at a dealership.. they send me to training every time new cars/systems/technology comes out which makes me certified and feel confident in my repairs. I know guys at independent shops who tell me regularly they feel out of the loop and don't feel comfortable fixing stuff sometimes cause they honestly just don't know due to not having the training we get. That's just how I feel, take your car wherever you'd like. It's not affecting my paycheck or life in anyway, have a awesome day!

Your view is all wrong. The customer should be treated with respect. When a customer sees good work and is treated well he will return more and more.

But the dealer mechanic who made that statement, he said that he cared less about solving someone's issue with their vehicle if, in the computer system, it shows they only came to the dealer for warranty related service.

How is that a sign that the customer has disrespected the dealership?

California is a socialist cess pool disaster bankrupt and on the verge of complete collapse. it's the most backwards state in the union. Many dealerships have best price/ price match guarantees on tires but still, this is probably a prank post..
