And so did many small boats. The owners used them as anchors.

The 305 in my Firebird Formula was the most doggedy, slow revving, high-rpm-deprived, emissions choked, low compression, tiny bored piece of shit I ever had the displeasure of using on a daily basis, and I have owned some real pieces of junk. If that Formula hadn't been a WS6 equipped model it would have had no redeeming quality at all. luckily it was, and I didn't need to slow down too often. Thank God, because I'd still be accelerating to 60 mph today from a stop I made in 1995! I got a speeding ticket in that car once. The cop told me I had been doing 50 in a 30. Impossible, I said. The green light is only 100 yards away. This car needs at least a mile to do 50 mph. The cop laughed: he knew.

I'd take a proper oversquare 265 with a four barrel over a 305.

The crazy thing is that my 104 hp was NOT even the weakest engine offered that year... the Iron Duke was a four cyl. offering in the '82 Camaros. It was so weak that it would simply get the vapors and faint if somebody within earshot even suggested a drag race. 90 horses form the Iron Duke... probably what a Prius makes at idle.

Oh, and I DID have a Pinto back in the day, too... still have it... sorta.

It was a heap... even for a Pinto. Only one brake (a rear, at that) even provided the smallest resistance upon full brake pedal application, it caught fire frequently (fuel mixture too rich, tailpipe dragged and created sparks), it stalled in hard turns, it was all bad. I eventually used a hacksaw to cut the roof off, and drove it for a while as a convertible. Then, it finally just couldn't drive another inch. I sold the rims, and somebody stole the engine (I kid you not... it really happened).

So, then, I had a primered Pinto, with no roof, no wheels, sitting on blocks in my Dad's yard. He was really pleased with that.

Until one day, when the county came through with a backhoe. They were digging a new sewer line. I asked them if they would dig a big hole, and drop my Pinto into it... then cover it back up, like a cat does in the litter box. The fellas thought that would be a blast, so they happily obliged.

Eventually, I bought the house (and property) from my dad... that ol' Pinto is still back there, buried in a deep hole.

I can't think of a better place for a Pinto.
That story made my day.. Thanks..

Glad you had a good Chuckle. I'll try and dig up a picture of it and post it for everyone to see. I had a lot of fun with that car and while it was a pretty basic build it always ran and never let me down and just cranked it weekend after weekend. Last time I had it out was after I rebuilt the engine and did some more fine tuning over the Winter. I got out to one event with it and broke 10 seconds with it and the track tech told me I had to upgrade safety stuff to run those times. I told them I'd turn off the N2O and slow it down so they would let me race. The truth was the N2O wasn't hooked up and it was an all motor run so I should have been able to break into the 8's with that car. But, life handles me a divorce shortly after that weekend and I parted out the car and that was the lasttime I dragged raced.

I had a 305 Tuned port motor at one point, factory rated at a miserable 190HP. 1.6 roller rockers, gutting the airbox, bigger throttle body, intake runners, hypertech chip and headers back(no cat) and that car actually went pretty damn good considering

my 88 had the TBI 305 while it was not fast as say a current V6 model it was enough get up and go for me in Florida where there are NO hills. it was more of a cruiser tho, with the t tops off and the 6 disc changer loaded with my fave CDs, it was a fun car but if I ever got another 3rd gen it would be a 350 car for sure.

That describes my most perfect memories of my '82: T-Tops off, six- disc Pioneer changer (mounted in the BACK, thanks to marvelous technology!), cranking Def Leppard... even if the car couldn't win a drag race against a Winnebago towing another Winnebago, I still felt like Burt Reynolds/ Eric Estrada/ David Hasselhoff/ Steve McQueen.

Just wishful dreaming here, but if they did make one maybe it would come with those bad ass seats from the Chevy SS.
