I'm not terribly happy with that deal but I've not yet mentioned the trade. I have some numbers in my head as to what I'd like to pay over and above my trade so I'm going to see if that can help bring it down a tad...but we are very close.

You might want to consider negotiating the best purchase price you can on the new car, completely separate from any discussion about a trade in, and look to sell your current car at carmax.
I think you might come out better overall with that strategy.

I managed to get one of those $1000 private offers, do I hold that puppy back till the very end and just use it like a $1000 bill?

Not sure how it works there but here we pay a sales tax on new cars but when you trade in a car you only pay sales tax on the difference. So when I traded in my vehicle for my ZL I also calculated how much I was saving on tax and it made the deal really sweet for me and ultimately made the difference on if I was getting it or not. I already had my trade in sold privately but when I did the tax calculation I ended up $3K ahead by trading it in. Just something to consider.

Yes hold your private offer until the very end when everything has been agreed to and you are ready to do the paperwork, good luck!

I'm going to buy a Camaro maybe this weekend after I finish the deal on my truck/camper. I should have between $20-24k as a down payment. The price on the 2014 ZL1 I'm looking at is $65k. I configured a similarly equipped 2015 on the Chevy site and that was only $61k so I'm pretty sure $65k is way overpriced. With the 2015s showing up on lots what would be a fair price now for the 2014? If they don't come down enough on it I probably won't be able to sweet talk the wife into it and will go with a 2014 2SS. I'd be happy with that though but want to try to get the most I can with the best deal I can.

Is that the dealer price or MSRP?

Worst case, you should pay MSRP. You should be able to pay less. A Costco Gold membership will get you near invoice pricing. Most Credit Unions will get you near Employee pricing, which would probably be $3000 or more below MSRP at that price. Or you can simply negogiate a similar price. If that dealer won't work with you, walk away. You can find one someone else and/or order exactly what you want.

This is true in New York as well. Add this to the obvious fact you have to continue to insure the car while you try to sell it, and it's almost break even on selling the car yourself versus what the dealer is going to give you. While this is true for most cars, collector cars have a better return through private sale. Only once have I sold a car privately and it was a Civic (in very high demand). Still took too long IMO. In hindsight I would have lost a hundred dollars on trade-in. Just not worth the hassle of private sale.

Well, I did it! It was really surreal because there were a few extenuating circumstances which meant the dealer had to bring the vehicle to me! We finalized the paperwork in my living room...anyway I bought the ZL1, got a fair amount for my trade and I was able to hand over the $1000 private offer at the last second. Overall I'm happy and the car is a beast.
