Do somethin fun every day
|
I had some discussions with Tony at sjmautoprod and I picked up from him the 3mm light pipe (which fit perfectly in the boot gap area), two GM ice blue leds and a male on one end, female on the other jumper to plug in between my ABL dash tap from my 4 pack gauges.
I wanted a continuous band of light around the shifter boot and I wanted it GM ice blue. I tried a number of configurations until I ended on both ends of pipe going down into a common hole. I didn't drill any new holes just used an existing boot tuck hole on the bottom right corner, passenger side, near the e-brake. There was room there under the boot section for the led and pipe ends to hang down. I tried both led bulbs hooked there and then decided to try to couple just one bulb there. In the end I went with just the one LED. I am sure there could be other 2 LED configs were maybe the light was coming from 2 opposite corners with two double drop points to help balance the light a little more and maybe make a little brighter all the way around. Bottom line, I was happy with the single LED config. I used 24" of light pipe. Pictures below. Top view where both ends of the light pipe go down a common existing hole: ![]() The ends of both pieces of light pipe cut evenly with a cutting tool, coupled to one LED with heatshrink and some electrical tape: ![]() Installed top view: ![]() ABL boot lighting in the dark. Note that the light is continuous all the way around and any breaks you see are the leather boot getting in the way:

Thanks, the driver's side isn't really as dim as it appears.
Clearly, the 2 LEDs on opposite corners would totally remedy all that. After thinking about it a little, 24" of light pipe MIGHT be close for two double drop points, not sure.

I don't really like the slits in the led tube. Can it be made to be a completely clear tube?

If it was completely clear, the light would have nothing to reflect off of. You would not see the pipe in a normal install, anyway.

You can see them when the light is on though, as the previous poster showed. Can it not be made with the same material that the dash abl/ door abl uses?

That's looking straight down on it. Maybe he can post a shot from an angle (the pipe would be hidden).
Quick answer: No. The dash and stock door pipes are not flexible. Flex means that you need a wider angle for the light-reflecting features so that they can be oriented properly around the bends. |
