Sounds like buying a shop manual is quite easy for you. You have to remember that everyone is not in the same place financially. I can't afford taking my car to the dealership to get fixed nor to buy a shop manual. This is why I'm apart of such a great forum. To get helped out when I need a bit of clarification on a part or two by a fellow member, not to get bashed because I'm asking for some help. I'm quite shocked by the negative response...
It was not intended as a negative response but rather, merely an observation. By using the phrase "creatively tear apart", I simply meant you apparently dove into a fairly complex disassembly using only your mechanical and interpretive abilities to do so. That was quite bold and daring and now you've hit a roadblock. Not surprising - we all do it to one degree or another. You can drop your shields - I meant no insult.

And I get ya - shop manuals ain't cheap - around $300 for a complete set. However, if you intend to do all your own repairs and keep your Camaro for a significant amount of time... it's a worthwhile investment that will pay for itself quite readily.

That, sir, is totally uncalled for. If I were truly an a-hole I would report your post and you would be reprimanded. However, my skin is quite thick (unlike some others here) and life has taught me to disregard those who show aggression behind the shield of the internet.

I stand corrected. Apparently you did not blindly dive into this adventure, but you did make it sound that way. Continued success to you.

Report the post thats fine with me. You were critizing someone that is trying to fix his car with limited funds and took it upon himself to try and fix the best he could. He was just asking for help and not to be critized. If you can't be part of the solution then just read and move on.

I never have, nor would I ever, report someone for posting something like what you posted - it really does just roll off my back. I'm just saying it's uncalled for in such a forum.

And, I have already explained the intent of my original post to OP. I believe my suggestion to purchase shop manuals could be considered "part of the solution". It would also serve to help with many future repairs OP may take on, as well as a source of information for fellow C5 and Camaro owners in his circle... maybe even you at some future date. I guess I was supposed to first inquire how much money OP has to invest before offering a solution.

Hats off to you StlRomAniaN. I've been in your shoes for years and I applaud you for trying to do what you can with as few bucks as possible. Good luck and please let us know how you make out. Based on the increasing amount of posts lately about the heater core issues your knowledge will be sought after by many..... we're glad to have you on board!

Thanks for all of your help in advance. Hopefully someone has access to a service manual.
Awesome job dude! I'm in the same boat as far as funds go, row on.

Hey, did you get it apart. I just saw your PM sorry I didn't reply.

I found that when I got the HVAC box out of the car, even though the manual said to remove screws to open it up...I had to drill out a few positions that were plastic welded together instead of screws. I can't remember off the top of my head, but there were way more than 4 of them.

I put the screws back in and didn't bother adding anything where I had drilled it out, and I've had no issues at all. I probably could have used some small self tapping machine screws for plastic, but I didn't bother as there are a LOT of screws holding it together anyways.

You will need to drain your AC to remove the box from the car, and then re-charge it later on...once it's drained you can unbolt the lines from the firewall on the drivers side in the engine bay to seperate them from the box. AC shops can recycle your refrigerant for you as it's bad for the environment to just let it vent out.

I'm not sure what this stuff is referring to, but I didn't go anywhere near any parts like this to replace my heater core...I had everything apart just like the OP does.

There was with my 2012 SS that had 14,000 miles, thus it got traded because I would not have wanted it back after such a major job at the dealership. I really think there is a bigger issue than we think with these cars and heater cores that should not be going bad when they do. I could be wrong though???
