Hernando pours on free music for Water Tower Festival
Henry Bailey Jr., Commercial Appeal
4:10 PM, Sep 30, 2014
7:50 AM, Oct 1, 2014

desoto

Folks from across the region who want to immerse in small-town charm get to dive into music, crafts and family-friendly fun Oct. 10-11 at Hernando’s annual Water Tower Festival — and the price is nice.

“It’s all free this year, thanks to some generous sponsors,” said Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce executive director Susan Fernandez. The only costs are for food and beverages, available from vendors, and to join the Oct. 11 10K.

The band Rustenhaven is the featured entertainment Oct. 10, with music starting at 7 p.m. On Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. it’s big hair and a tuneful time with the Bouffants. Other activities Oct. 11 starting at 8 a.m. include a car show, kids’ zone, the weekly Hernando Farmers Market and arts and crafts. Events wrap up at 11 p.m. each day.

Another treat on the quaint courthouse square is the barbecue-cooking contest: “We’re up to 19 teams, at last count,” said Fernandez. An extra section of Panola Street will be closed off to accommodate the team turnout.

“It’s not a sanctioned contest,” she said, but the cook-off seals in who’s hog boss in town. “It’s all about bragging rights.”

Hernandez expects a flow of 5,000 over the two-day festival, and hopes some visitors will stay to work and play, as residents: “That’s the thing we’d really like to see.”

Participants in the 10K will get a close look at leafy-lined streets and historic districts.

Last year’s city-sponsored race/run drew some 300 people from across the area for the event that starts at 8 a.m. Oct. 11 in the shadow of Hernando’s iconic, 1920s water tower just east of the square on U.S. 51.

“It’s one of the biggest activities the city puts on,” said Gia Matheny, Hernando’s community development director. “And it’s grown over the years. Our goal this year is to have 350 runners and walkers.”

Admission is $25 in advance, with registration available online at racesonline.com, and $30 the day of the race.

A post-race party, included in admission, is slated at the Courtyard, just south of the square on Panola Street, featuring live music by Danny McGreger, and food and beverages from Zaxby’s, Edible Arrangements, Papa John’s Pizza and Kroger.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three overall finishers and to the winners in each age/gender category as well as fastest wheelchair and fastest team.

Just trying to be sure everyone is in the know. Also wanted to highlight what a great event I think this is. Great opportunity for our club to do a charity event.

By the way, I talked with our friends at Bluff City Mustangs. I think some of their crew are going to try to make it out to the Hernando Water Tower Festival car show as well.

Hope you enjoyed the Commercial Appeal article Dustin. LOL!

Hi everyone. Name is Dominick (DJ). I've lived in Cordova, TN for 2 years now, and lived down in Southaven for about 4 years before that. Glad I found a local forum on Camaro5. Here are some pics of my car. Would like to find some meets/hang-outs with other Camaro owners around here.

I hate that sir, but certainly understand. Your Z would have done well in our judging.

Sweet ride DJ and glad you found us! Love your color scheme and you've done some nice mods as well.

We have a couple of events coming up in the next two weekends.

The first is the Hernando Water Tower Festival Car Show on Saturday, October 11th. Registration begins at 9am and the fee is $25 day of. We've got goodie bags for all participants and each registered participant is eligible for 5 awards. We've also got some great door prizes as well. This is a charity car show with proceeds benefiting the YMCA. If you come out, please put Bluff City Camaro Club on your registration form. I'm hoping our club might have a chance of walking away with the club participation award. If you have any questions, you can contact me at 901.508.5435 or kcrim @ymcamemphis.org.

The second event that we have coming up the following Saturday (October 18th) is a cruise to Shiloh with the Music City Camaro Club (Nashville). You should find more details on here about that event, but feel free to let us know if you want addt'l info...we'll put you in touch with Cooley and Adam F.

We have a group of folks who go to the Bartlett Cruise-In on Thursday nights. We also have a smaller group that goes to Tom's Cruise-In on Tuesday nights. I'm not sure what is going on with Cars and Coffee in Germantown (4th Saturday of every month), but we have some folks who go to that as well.

Feel free to join us at any of these.

Look forward to meeting you.

Hello Dominick, glad to see you've done some work to your SS. 2" headers and exhaust, I'm surprised I haven't heard you around town yet. But yea we normally meet up for toms cruise on Tuesday but that ended last week until the spring now. Barlett cruise in on Thursdays, idk if that's still going on this week or not. If so I plan to be there if the weather permits. My Z will be in the shop more and likely so I'll either be in a rental or my old daily driver.
