Z/28 Track Preparation

It would be neat to have a thread dedicated SOLELY to Z/28 track preparation. A pilot's checklist if you will.

This is for cars that see >50% street use (rather than dedicated track weapons). Please add your tried and tested specs/solutions to the thread. Feel free to propose a section that builds out the checklist.

If you do not have personal experience on track with, or preparing, a Z/28 for the track please refrain from posting here. Legitimate questions from those thinking about tracking a Z/28 are welcome!

A. Necessary
1. Alignment:
Street: ...
Track (optional): ...

2. Tires:
a) Trofeo R:
Cold temp: “221 kPa / 32 psi” (Section 9.6 OM)
Hot temp: 32 psi
- "...they are designed to run at pressures around 2.2 bar (“hot” tyres), the finite adjustments depending on vehicle type." (Pirelli website: http://www.pirelli.com/mediaObject/p...R_2014_ENG.pdf)

b) Hoosier R6 (Size TBD):
Cold: ...
Hot: 35-36 degs (my preference on other cars - to be tested on the Z/28)

c) Other?
Cold: ...
Hot: ...

3. Brakes, Pads, Fluids:
a) Pads:
i. Stock
ii. Other?
- Note: “…complete the appropriate high performance brake burnishing procedure…” (Sec. 9.6 OM)
- Burnishing: 0-60-0 mph x 25-50 runs Followed by a 10 mile cool-down drive (c/o backintotops)

b) Fluid: Sec. 9.6 OM: “...it is recommended that the brake fluid be replaced with a high performance brake fluid that has a dry boiling point greater than 279°C (534°F). Do not use silicone or DOT-5 brake fluids.
- Note: Bleed fluid completely through clutch".

4. Cooling:
a) Remove water deflector under the hood scoop
b) Sec. 9.6 OM: “...reduce the coolant/water mixture to a 30/70 mix”.
c) Add WaterWetter

5. Fluids:
a) Engine Oil
50W recommended in the manual
Recommended oil change mileage:
- I typically change oil every 4 track days (4-5 sessions of 20-30 mins/day), or 5,000 street miles. YMMV

b) Differential fluid: Change every 6 track hours

6. Tow Hooks:
a) Skylane765 (www.zl1addons.com)
b) Other?

B. Optional
7. Data/video system:
a) SmartyCam/AiM Solo
b) Dash Logic
c) Traqmate

8. Harness Bar / Roll Cage (that doesn't destroy the interior):
a) Brey-Krause: http://www.bkauto.com/category_s/100.htm ?
b) Other?

9. Wickerbill

10. Accelerator pedal extension for heel/toe

Great thread.

Question. Looking at my buddy's brand new 15' 1LE, when you remove the rain tray from under the hood scoop how does the hood liner stay attached where the rain tray helps keep it secure to the underside of the hood?

Seems after you remove the rain tray the hood liner would flop around during high speed tracking.

I didn’t align for the track since i drive so much on the street and ran 5 days on the track and corded the front left. Align for track.

Note: “…complete the appropriate high performance brake burnishing procedure…” (Sec. 9.6 OM)
25? 0-60mph...? runs and hard stops followed by a ...? cooling period.
I did 10-60-10 repeated 50 times then drove 10 miles.

Fluid: Sec. 9.6 OM: “...it is recommended that the brake fluid be replaced with a high performance brake fluid that has a dry boiling point greater than 279°C (534°F). Do not use silicone or DOT-5 brake fluids.
SRF

4. Cooling:
a. Remove water deflector under the hood scoop
b. Sec. 9.6 OM: “...reduce the coolant/water mixture to a 30/70 mix”.
c. Add WaterWetter
I only added 1 bottle of water wetter and have not run on a hot day since but somehow I think the Z runs hot all the time anyway.

5. Oil:
a. 50W recommended in the manual
b. Recommended oil change mileage:

yes 50 and the dealer will do it for free.

6. Tow Hooks:
a. Skylane765 (www.zl1addons.com)
b. Other?
It is an insult to even think there are “others”. For so little money Skylane fixed a big error.

B. Optional
7. Data/video system:
a. SmartyCam/AiM Solo
b. Dash Logic
c. Traqmate
Traqmate

8. Harness Bar / Roll Cage (that doesn't destroy the interior):
a. Brey-Krause: http://www.bkauto.com/category_s/100.htm ?
b. Other?
go to a psychic on this one
+ wickerbill
+ maybe http://goo.gl/SRg5LQ
+ change diff fluid every 6 track hours

I just put back enough plastic pins to keep the liner in place.

...and of all people I should not have forgotten this...you MUST bleed the SRF or whatever race brake fluid you move up to COMPLETELY THROUGH THE CLUTCH!!!

Did they separate the clutch/brake reservoir on the Z28? If not, add a separate clutch reservoir. I've added a remote Tick clutch speed bleeder which is a real time saver.
