four tires & wheels fit inside car in backseat area
I have been struggling with an easy method to transport my road course tires and wheels and wanted to try removing the backseat and see what fits. To my surprise, all four wheels/tires fit with room to spare straight across in the backseat area. Removing the backseat is a 10 min job so don't worry about it. The seat cushion just lifts up off its two front and rear clips. The seat back is retained by one central 18mm nut and 4 15mm screws on the sides. Here is a pic of them ready for the trip to VIR this weekend. My tires are 285/35-20 Toyo Proxes on a set of cheap wheels(no lighter than stock).

Interesting. Difficult though with a cage or harness bar. I am honestly considering adding add a hitch to the car for the next season

GM engineers wanted to remove back seats from the Z/28, but realized the seats add quite a bit of rigidity, and a cross bar would not be any lighter.
Long story short, you're losing precious body rigidity.

Here is an exerpt from the GM press release concerning the rear seats in the Z28...
"The rear seats of the Z/28 have also been modified for weight reduction. A total of nine pounds (four kilograms) was saved by eliminating the seat-back pass through, as well as using high-density foam in place of the rigid structure of the seat back and steel mesh of the seat bottom." "Quite a bit of rigidity"...I doubt it. A harness bar could easily be bolted in position for track days and removed quickly for transportation. I have used a hitch and cargo carrier and it proves to be a PITA and hassle. If I get more serious, the car is going on a trailer.

so they left the frame but without the hinge and covered it up with foam instead of the hard almost luggage floor like backing?

As far as I understand, they somehow reduced its weight by replacing its padding without removing from its chassis.

Good question. I am 6'0" and there is some compromise. I am not in a "clown car" but definitely up a few inches. I can handle it for the 160 mile trek to VIR.

update...front seat has much more travel if the tires are deflated...no surprise. Very livable for a long ride like this.

Trailer has worked great for me, except the one time that I broke at the track.
This is a small Lowe's trailer with a couple of truck tool boxes attached. Higher quality than the Harbor Freight trailer I borrowed from a friend once. IMG_5542 by solomontodd, on Flickr

Just getting away from 12" barely-bigger-than-wheelbarrow tires seems like a really good idea if you care much for your trailer's wheel bearings long term.
