Lateral Runout or "Why rust on hubs/rotors is bad"

I was having vibration through the pedal (and rear view mirror) when braking from 45mph through 39mph.

I tried re-bedding the pads. That helped a bit. But it did not go away.

I read the updated installation instructions GM posted for the SS Brembo upgrade kit. They made particular mention of thoroughly cleaning the rust off the hubs when upgrading/changing rotors to avoid lateral runout - which causes vibration.

So when I replaced my Brembo calipers yesterday, I spent a lot of time cleaning the hubs & rotors. After the re-install of the rear rotor/caliper set, the vibration problem was gone on the road test.

The moral of the story: Rust on the hubs and rotors is bad.

I learned today there is a kit to attach to a drill to clean the rust off. I wish I'd have had one yesterday. I went through a lot of wire brushes and steel wool!
