For what it's worth... thanks to all you "dummies with laptops" for what you do. I change my own oil and rotate tires and a few other minor things, but when it comes to electronics and modern car mechanics - I count on you guys. I don't like paying the cost for your expertise (who does?), but I appreciate what you do and accept it as part of the cost of having a modern day vehicle.

I'm a dummy with a laptop, but for industrial controls. You won't believe how many customers want their machine programmed to do mutually exclusive things.

While the laptop won't always tell you what is wrong, it's a lot harder to diagnose problems without one.

I was a instrumentation mechanic that worked for a large chemical company. Many of our instruments were tied into computerized control systems and I can tell you that electronics are very hard to diagnose sometimes. A problem in one system can cause issues in one or more other systems. And sometimes all it takes is someone using the wrong wattage light bulb when an indicator goes out, guess how hard something like that is to find. It's usually a lot more complicated than it seems. As we used to say "Electronics, when they work they are great, when they fail they are a PITA."

I brought my 2014 Sierra in because it was misfiring. (Faulty spark plug wire because I brought into another dealership who could see me same day when this occurrence happened before) This moron tells me the camshaft is bad. Need to replace it. Im like WOW! OK! Get me a rental. That afternoon I get a call. Your trucks fixed. It was a faulty spark plug wire. I went there and said I dont want that moron working on my truck anymore if I have to bring it back in. They said well he said that before he connected it to the computer, it wasn't a final diagnoses. I said I dont care. I dont want him working on my vehicles. Brought it in a col more times for software recalls and he's yet to work on it. lol
Ummmm, You took your Sierra in for a misfire and you were told it was a bad camshaft. You say o.k. get me a rental and you leave it there to get the camshaft fixed? Then you get called later and told it was a faulty spark plug wire and call the mechanic a moron. Your the one that went in for a misfire and believed them when they told you it was a bad camshaft. Something is fishy about this story!

ahh the good old dealership blame game... blame it on the aftermarket equipment. could a current draw be the radio, yes. but who knows unless you remove the radio. when dealers see aftermarket items this is always their first line of defense. they can charge full price. this is why the magnusson-moss act was created to protect the consumer from things like this. but that only covers for cars in warranty.

OP do you have any other aftermarket electronics in your car? they could be the cause also.

i agree 110 is good actually. its the going rate for dealer work. hell i think even smaller shops near me are about 75-100/hr. so they probably just charged you 1 hour of labor.

I hear ya, Wayne. I was just using the term of the day from this post. I know there's a lot to diagnosing and figuring out problems with today's cars.
