It's an effort to cover GM's ass in this age of mighty litigation.

Try starting the car with the new replacement key alone without the fob nearby. Some say there is a chip in the plastic on the new replacement key. I don't think it clears the immobilizer itself without the fob being present.

WTH???? OK about two months ago I signed the waiver to not have this done. Yesterday I get a postcard from GM saying as of the first of November I have not had the recall completed. Has GM now decided not to allow us to decline the recall? I am going to my dealer tomorrow to find out what is going on.

Ditto.

Yes I remember reading that post.

About a month ago before I put my Camaro up for winter storage I tried the new key alone leaving the fob in the house. I can't remember if it started the car or not. I do remember the alarm going off from trying the ignition only. Door was already unlocked. Had to run in and grab the fob to shut off alarm.

Yep GM has decided to pull the Waiver option and will continue to bug the hell out of you until you get it done. One thing on mine I am just going to mod the flip part and put a screwdriver or fingernail file in place of the old key part.

See...now if GM simply would have done the keyless start from the beginning, NONE of this would have been an issue. Keyless start should be mandatory in all vehicles. You got the key? It's in your pocket? Get in the car and press start. That's pretty freakin' easy, huh. Tech is already done. It's available for so many makes and models. This is just a no brainer.

What? It's going to cost more to just do keyless for all vehicles?

Ok. Tell me how much the original key, all the components in the steering column, and the new "fix," all the headache and potential for lawsuits, all the time committed by all the dealers, all the letters being sent out, all the employee time spent on the fix, etc was the better and less expensive way to go from the start.

Just do keyless. Maybe I'm missing something, but...it makes sense to me.

But remember this car was designed more than 5 years ago. How many GM cars had push button start at that time? The key issue was not brought up until last year, before that nobody thought there was an issue. Hindsite is easy to go back and say they should have done this or should have done that but nobody that I know can see into the future when designing something that may discover to have issues 4 or 5 years down the road.
