I believe if you were to trade it in they give you that amount on top of whatever trade in price they offer.....I may be wrong, since I got the SS I didn't qualify for the cash for clunkers :( But we wouldn't have anyway the clunker we have is a 95 oldsmobile and it gets better gas mileage than the Camaro anyway.

So I'm guessing that would have probably been around $1,000 or so? Dang oh well guess it is to late to try to get that discount!

On the contrary my dealership didn't haggle on that fact and went with the manual getting 22mpg so I did get my v6 manual WITH cash for clunkers

i guess your application slipped through the cracks? i mean... its pretty clear that the manual gets 21mpg combined and thus doesn't qualify: fueleconomy.org link to v6 manual

you lucked out or something

Yea that seems a bit fishy Bumblebeeyotch. Also, did you order it and turn in your clunker and have to wait for your Camaro to come in and then put in your downpayment?

The v-6 manual qualifies for $3500.

No, actually, it does not. Feel free to go to fueleconomy.org or cars.gov and try to look it up.

No offense to anyone here but these government websites do not lie, they simply state facts and the 2 facts that apply to this situation are:
1. the manual v6 camaro is rated 21mpg combined
2. the new vehicle you get from the trade in must be rated 22mpg or higher (if it is a passenger vehicle and not an suv/minivan/truck)

Isn't it worth around 5k as a trade in? You could go trade it in and get 1k off a new car since you still owe 4k on it... assuming you can get 5k for it
i WOULDN'T trade it in as a clunker... for that reason. yes i was told 5k for my trade. but it's worth more if i sell it myself which is what i'm doing...or trying to do anyway! i'm not trading it because i need to get AT LEAST 5k from my car that i can put down on my camaro. so i am trying to get 9 for it so that i can pay off my car and then still have the 5k to put down on mine... plus i'm saving roughly 5-6k of my own money before the car comes.

People need to be careful. The dealership credits you the C.A.R.S. money. The dealership then sumbits the sale to the program. If the car doesn't qualify, or the application is rejected for any reason then the government doesn't refund the dealership. Then the dealership will come after you the customer for that money they creditted you. I assume that most if not all dealerships have that in the fine print of the sales contract. Good luck.

Edit: What am I saying, all government programs runs smooth as silk, AND a dealership salesperson would never mis-represent or lie about anything to make sale would they. /end sarcasm/

Isn't there a loophole if you are going from a truck to an SS. As the truck trade in reads the new vehicle only needs to be 2-5 MPG better than your current trade in. They don't stick a minimum MPG on it. Or is that assuming a lateral move to another truck?

that 2-5mpg requirement is to another truck/suv/minivan.

go to cars.gov and click the top right tab "mpg ratings" and play around with it. pick a truck as your trade in and the camaro as the new car and see what happens

btw stratman, are you gonna trade your S10 in? you totally should!

I didn't do anything "fishy" though. I walked into the dealership. Sat down with a salesman. Told him I have a cash for clunker and I want to use it for the 2LT that's in your showroom. Gave him my clunkers info and off he went to compare and contrast on the same cars.gov website that everyone uses. Came back about 10min later and said ok here's what the payment would be. Used my clunker as the down payment. so nothing out of pocket.
Also, no, I did not order my camaro. I was just lucky enough to find the exact camaro that I was looking for that was available for immediate sale.

It's not "fishy" per say, but the CARS.gov site only recently added the mpg lookup tool feature that lets you pick a trade-in and replacement. What dealerships did before was look stuff up on fueleconomy.org and interpret the rules themselves (as far as what qualified and what didnt). What most likely happened in your case is that the salesman misinterpreted the rules (which isnt surprising considering how confusing they are) and approved you for the incentive even though technically speaking the manual Camaro v6 does not qualify for C4C.

As far as what will happen now... I think there is a chance that the dealership may contact you in a few weeks looking for their $3500 if the government rejects the claim. If not though, and you slip through the cracks, then hey... nice!
