It's normal for them to stick up some, not sure it should be that much though.

I think it's the inverted pic and low angle making that gap look a little big.
This is a very common panic reaction after setting your car back down and really looking at those strut tops, LOL. It is normal!

Are both sides about the same? I can't remember if there was big washers on the top of the strut rod, but I think there was. Did you pay attention to the order of all the parts when you took it apart?
