I have a '96 3.8L standard that has the same problem... I replaced the pump assembly, and now the gas gauge only reads 7/8 full when the tank is full... And, it only takes about 5 gallons of gas, when the gauge reads 1/2 full... The implication of this is, that the gauge will read "empty" while the tank still has 10 or 12 gallons... This is unacceptable if you use the car for a trip of 400 miles or more... You'd have to stop every 200 miles, fill up just to get the red light to go out... Or, drive with the red light on and HOPE you don't run dry.
And, as I read all these posts, I find a lot of people have the same problem, but for some reason this problem is: Unfixable? We need a better answer than that. Please. Frank |

My 94 3.4 L, 5 speed has an inaccurate fuel gauge but also failed to suck the last couple of gallons out of the tank. If you went 300 miles your on fumes or running out. I since have had the fuel pump replaced and it seems to suck more of the fuel out. I have never tried to see how much fuel it will now pull out of the tank. If memory serves me correctly the tank holds 15.5 gallon and the most I have recently put in was 13.25. I always reset the trip odometer to keep from running out.

As others have stated, I'll reiterate the fuel sending unit issue.
I'd guess it's a fuel sending unit issue

It turns out, that when Chevrolet/AC/Delco sells you a pump unit for your 4th generation Camaro, they're selling a pump that *fits* several different models.. And thus, the sending unit may not be sending the correct information to your gauge. The "Tech" down at the Chevrolet Dealer told me, he bends a little rod on the sending unit to fix the problem. He didn't say, there was a "Shop Bulletin" telling him that... I'm going to find out about that. But, if there wasn't a "bulletin," then they are essentially selling a defective pump unit. And if they're selling you a pump unit that's defective they're responsible for for it. I'm still in the process of getting this resolved... My car is at the dealer as I write this... When I get there, I'll let you know. Frank |
