Exactly . How ever even if it is not in or too close to the sidewall ,it is now not V ,W , or Y speed rated and should not be driven over 90 MPH IMHO . FYI big tire dealer do not want the liability ,and won't patch V, W, Y speed rated tires. Ambulance chasing Lawyer's have turned this country into a real shithole ,and then they become politician's .So it is up to you to find a small tire shop that has nothing to loose ( no receipt pay cash) and let them patch it and take your chances .

Okay, I'm a little ignorant about some of the data on the tire. It's a 285/35/ZR20 SL. I know the dimensions, but is the ZR the speed rating? The dealership said they'd get me a new tire for $237 since it's so new. My friend at a tire shop said he can't get it at cost for that... I'm in a dilemna... what to do ahhh!!!

Yes it is ZR rated . as to what to do, that's your call . if you ever had a high speed blow out ,you would know what to do . $237.00 mounted and balanced is a very good deal .

If you don't take the car to the track, find someone to patch it and move on. If you do track it, maybe give it some thought, but it's very unlikely that it would ever fail. I've never seen any of our race tires with patches or plugs fail if that's any testament. It's up to you though, whatever your comfortable with.

I would get it patched. Easier on the wallet unless of course you are going to track it and want the peace of mind of the brand new tire.

Maybe Goodyear could give you a better price if you call them?

I appreciate all of the information. I raced superbikes for years (GSX-R's)and know the ins-and-outs of those tires and gear but not too knowledgable (yet) on these tires. My 1968 Buick GS400 is sitting on redlines... now that's performance hahaha. Thanks again.

I say plug it too, I track all the time (2-3 weekends per month) and have a rear tire that had a 3/8" inch lag bolt in the middle of it, 4000 miles and 4 track days ago.

My Camaro SS that I traded to get my 1LE got a nail in the tire right in the middle of the tread, I plugged it had no other problems.

Look. You want to waste a couple of hundred dollars every time you get a nail because it helps you sleep better, by all means.

But please cut the "high speed blowout" scare-tactic crap that helps you justify your decision. I've had stick-type plugs come out at high speed at least 4 times (for various reasons), including twice while I've had a knee on the deck and the results each and every time could be best described as "uneventful".

A true "blowout" isn't caused by punctures, it's typically caused by hitting a large piece of debris in the road or, most commonly, excessive heat buildup in the tire caused by running it beyond it's speed or load rating (most commonly both at the same time) for extended periods of time.

True blowouts can be heart-stopping events, but to associate them with plugging a nail/screw hole is comical at best.

One patch in each one of my rear tires (these goodyears love picking up stuff) and running strong, almost 14k miles out of them. I go to America's tire, guys are awesome and they fix punctures for FREE!

They are just trying to use scare tactics to steal your money.

I've plugged tires plenty of times. I've seen several people put track time on plugged tires with no issues.

I wouldn't go for a top speed run on plugged tires, but I wouldn't worry about it short of that.

please see Tire Rack info on patched tires and the different tire mfg specs. Goodyear permits 1 tire plug repair to center section of tread and speed ratting will be maintained. More than 1 repair suggest tire replacement.
