Not necessarily.

The heat shields are provided to add some heat protection, but mostly for cosmetic reasons to cover the factory coils. Our test vehicles drove with and without covers on.

What size are the down pipes? Will these turbos make over 1k hp with a built bottom end?

The downpipes are 2.5" to match up to the factory exhaust flange.

Yes, we have made over 1200 rwhp with these exact turbos.

Not at this time. We used 2.5" to make sure there was adequate clearance to plug wires, etc. We have tested 2.5 to 3 inch, and there is almost no difference between the two when a free flowing exhaust is used from the downpipe back.
