Really???? I'm not saying that this is not right, but I've never heard of a "clutched" alternator.....

Alternator for M6 equipped Camaro's. It was a normal pulley.

I know that's what I was thinking!? And I was taking the guy that was buying the car for a test drive right after I took the S/C off lol.. I was full throttle on the highway herd a loud pop under the hood smelt a burning smell and my dash lit up like a Christmas tree. And for some weird reason he still wants to buy it!?

And I also found that its sometimes called a decoupler pulley.
I wonder if A6 is a Type 1 or Type 2? Seems like its a Type 2 http://www.decouplerpulley.com/files...a%20pulley.pdf B00STED SS, it looks like the two alternators are the same, just the pulley is different. There's a special tool to remove the pulley, you could probably rent one. Swap pulley's and you should be good. Last edited by Low Saturn; 01-10-2015 at 08:18 PM. |

Is it possible to just run the LS3 alternator? The fancy pulley isn't really necessary for the car to operate correctly. To me it looks like the pulleys are the same size and offset.

Ha! Ha! You're probably right, but there must be some technical reason. A clutch on the alternator would have to be there so the PCM can engage or disengage the alternator. Since the major difference between a LS3 and a L99 is AFM, I'd assume that it has something to do with that. I'm wondering if they disengage the alternator to reduce the load on the engine while AFM is kicking in or something.......I have the factory shop manuals for my car, I'll have to see if there's anything in there about this.
