Sound deadening pads

Anyone ever experiment with those under carpet pads, or other products to eliminate (or make a bit quieter) the 'drone' from loud exhaust? Trying to make it a bit quieter inside the car. I have axleback Flowmasters....

I have given this some thought as well. I was thinking of lining the trunk with dynamat which is used as a sound barrier. I have the N-II from Ark Performance and on the high way it does tend to drone a decent amount when pushing the pedal down.

I experimented with opening the back seats versus closing them and the sound levels were drastically different. So I imagine using sound proofing would work even better.

Wonder if a good under coating, or rhino-lining spray on the under belly would help??

Most of these pads would need to be inches thick to absorb the low drone.

Take it from someone who laid a 5/8" thick dynamat pad (designed for soundproofing between floors in homes with home theaters) in his trunk to get rid of drone in my Subaru.

It didn't help, and set me back $150.

Once I got my cam it was so loud (drone) my wife wouldn't ride in the car with me. Now that I added J Pipes and sound deadening for the drone and my stereo it is great. I can have windows up, radio turned on at normal level and have a convo. Some drone is still there but 90% better

Most of that is the J-pipes.

Droning is why I'm still rocking the stock catback.

From someone with a fair bit of aftermarket stereo experience, dynamat does work. But it is not intended for completely eliminating sound. I merely dampens it, but not low levels very well. The purpose is two fold; it is to stop higher frequencies (ie rattles) caused by vibrations it also prevents panels from mimicking the sound through vibration (because that sound is not good sound and reduces the overall quality you hear rather than sound solely from speakers). It really removes the background and unwanted noise associated with vibrating a motor vehicle. Its designed to stop rattles by changing the natural frequency of the material it is applied to by changing its weight. The thicker the pad the better because it moves the materials natural frequency away from its original making it easier at a more preferable frequency (ie one you will never normally hit).

Therefore unless your exhaust is causing some panels to rattle and create noise, then it will not help you. I have it on every panel of my car, it does make the interior quieter so I would recommend it for that, but don't expect miracles. So any rattle created by your exhaust (you may not even realize what panels are moving due to exhaust system), would be theoretically stopped, drone however is a different story.

Also dynamat is great but severely over priced. Go with Be-Quiet, they are a third the price and for 50 bucks you can do your entire trunk yourself. You can double this stuff up too if you want more deadening rather than buying a more expensive thicker pad. I have two coats of it in my trunk for the subs, and one everywhere else.

Check out Second Skin Audio. Their Damplifier is on point and they have other sound deadening options.

I insulated my entire unibody from the front seats back. These cars have NO unibody insulation from the factory.
I did the floors, 1/4 panels, w/housings, etc 100%.
It's so quiet now even with my Solo J-pipes. Little or no drone at any RPM.

I was just wondering the other day about a sound deadener material when running a rear seat delete kit. By removing the seats and putting in the kit it removes quite a bit of "insulation", the seats block / absorb quite a bit of noise.

What would be a good light weight option do you suppose?
