Definitive track tire comparison thread

NASA, one of the major racing bodies in US, already provides a list of tires v.s. their penalty points for road course track use. Even though NASA has a few such lists for various types of races, I picked the time trial, since that seems to be directly relevant to the road course track lap times.

NASA 2014 application form: https://nasa-assets.s3.amazonaws.com...sification.pdf
  • This list does not necessarily compare the tires within the same points class with each other, but is very useful to figure out how tires from different classes stand against each other.
  • I don't think that these points take longevity/consistency into account, since the time trial races focus on the best lap times.

[Higher point means better tire]
  • +15:
    • BFG R1S
    • Hoosier Wet DOT (if used in dry conditions)
  • +13:
    • BFG R1 (not an autocross tire!!!)
    • Goodyear Eagle RS AC (auto-cross)
    • Hankook Z214 (C90 & C91 compounds only)
    • Hoosier A6
  • +10:
The following DOT-approved R-compound tires and those with a UTQG treadwear rating of 40 or less not otherwise listed in these rules examples below).
    • Goodyear Eagle RS
    • Hankook Z214 (C71, C70, C51, C50)
    • Hoosier R6
    • Kumho V710, etc.
  • +9:
    • Toyo Proxes RR
    • Hankook TD
  • +7:
The following DOT-approved R-compound tires and those with a UTQG treadwear rating of 50 to 130
    • Kumho V700
    • Maxxis RC-1
    • Michelin Pilot Sport Cup
    • Nitto NT01
    • Pirelli PZero Corsa
    • Toyo R888
    • Toyo RA-1
    • Yokahama A048, etc.
  • +2:
DOT-approved (non-R-compound) tires with a UTQG treadwear rating of 120-200
    • Toyo R1R
    • Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec
    • Bridgestone Potenza RE070
    • Hankook R-S3
    • Kumho Ecsta XS
    • Yokohama Advan A046 &
    • Yokohama Advan Neova AD08
  • +30
    Non-DOT-approved racing slicks +30

A few remarks:
  • According to this, Z/28 OEM tired (Trofeo R) fall under +7 point bracket, probably at the high end of it.
  • Road course tire, BFG R1 is actually listed in the same category as the famous Hoosier A6 autocross tire! Unfortunately, they don't have sizes for Camaro (except 18", if you're up for it), but I am seriously considering the R1 for my Miata : )
  • Proxes RR is a step below the best road course tires (except the stand-alone R1), but might have a longer life as far as what I've read. No good Camaro sizes.
  • I stocked up Trofeo R and MPSC 2 tires at 305/30/19, and will most definitely try the NT01s just released at this size. I am looking forward to testing them all this summer.

Excellent thread, I think this is a great way to understand the relative strengths of the tires. Ready for a shocker? The proposed 2015 points adders are being modded. For example, the new Hoosier A7 = +22 points and A6s are +17 points, and the Hoosier R6s and R7s are only +10 points. This is on the NASA Time Trial forum:

Below are the current proposed rules for 2015 TT and PT regarding tires. These ARE NOT FINAL RULES, and this can be considered a comment period. However, for those of you that have time-sensitive decisions to make with contingency tires, I would say that there is a high probability that the +22 and +10 point listings for those tires are solid.

A. TIRES:
1) The following DOT-approved R-compound tires: BFG R1S, Goodyear Eagle RS AC (autocross), Hankook Z214 (C90 & C91 compound only), Hoosier A7, Hoosier Wet DOT (if used in dry conditions—see section 5.6) +22
2) The following DOT-approved R-compound tires: Hoosier A6 +17
3) The following DOT-approved R-compound tires and those with a UTQG treadwear rating of
40 or less not listed otherwise in these rules: BFG R1, Goodyear Eagle RS,
Hankook Z214 (C71, C70, C51, C50), Hoosier R6 & R7 & SM7, Kumho V710 (note: Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge EC-Dry tires OK (225, 245, 275) +10
4) The following DOT-approved R-compound tires: Toyo Proxes RR, Hankook TD +7
5) The following DOT-approved R-compound tires and those with a UTQG treadwear rating of
50 to 130: Maxxis RC-1 (ex. Kumho V700, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup, Nitto NT01, Pirelli
PZero Corsa, Toyo R888, Toyo RA-1, Yokahama A048, etc.) +6
6) DOT-approved (non-R-compound) tires with a UTQG treadwear rating of 120-200
(examples: BFG g-Force Rival, Bridgestone Potenza RE070, Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, Hankook R-S3, Kumho Ecsta XS, Toyo R1R, Yokohama Advan A046 & Neova AD08,) +2
7) Non-DOT-approved racing slicks +30 (of any origin--re-caps and re-treads are not permitted)

This is great information! Looks like A6 and A7 move to where they belong, and Proxes RR (and Hankook TD) lost a bit of points. Looking forward to seeing the finalized list. Once they do, we should update the formatted list on top.
