Need some help, please.

I have a 2011 LS w/47,500m. Some things have been occurring since I installed a K&N cai system. First, I noticed the mpg declined a bit. I thought you were supposed to gain mpg. Secondly, I notice a lot of black soot accumulating on the inside of the chrome tail pipes. Also, the check engine light recently came on and according to autozone, it spit out code p0420. The check engine light has since disappeared. Question: is there a need to have it tuned after installing the cai? Any ideas? Looking for some assistance. Thank you

to much oil on the filter, its getting on the mass airflow sensor, make the car run rich, and causes the cel to come on. Make sure there is not to much oli on the filter. Any car parts store sell mass air flow sensor cleaner, be careful the sensor is almost the size of a hair.

That MAF sensor shouldn't cause a P0420, which is a cat code for bank 1.

I would say can't cause it, but I'm hopeful you don't have to buy a catalytic converter so soon. Mostly just because I haven't taken mine off and I don't want to worry about them going bad at only 40,000

I "thought" the K&N CAI required a tune?

Kind of agree with what he ^^^ said. Don't think it's your MAF as it would cause Cels for both banks and it probably would throw codes for Too Rich fuel trims in addition to maybe the code you got.

Well it shouldn't set codes for those period, because the computer only uses the oxygen/air fuel ratio sensors to test the catalytic converters...

Does the K&N require a tune after install?

Front O2 is only used to set fuel trims (too much oil on intake filter results in less air, less air demands less fuel, too much less fuel demanded would trip a too rich fuel trim CEL). Rear O2 is used to test cat efficiency

I had the almost the same thing happen when I had my V6 and installed a K&N cai. The CEL kept coming on, then off, then on but I cannot recall the code. Anyway, I called K&N and explained the situation, and they suggested I send it back to them and they recommended another model number. I did just that, and no more CEL's or any other issues whatsoever. I know somewhere in my postings I have the information on what model number I exchanged it for...hope this helps.
