What you consider "most American"

Im not a thread starter usually, but a question I have been wondering over time is what brand or car would be considered "most american"?

Now many different aspects of opinion come into play when I think of this question, Brand and car historic clout, modern day factories(where built) etc, Country of origin parts(most used), Country ownership. I think of what was at the turn of the century and what is now in modern day considered American. I think of a few years back how experts had claimed that the most American made car/truck was toyota built in USA plant, yet does that count if it sells less then amercian home based brands? And that ponders another question; does the country of the headquarters and tradition that was started stand for something in the weight of all things considered?

Just figured of asking as I know many of us have discussed parts, brands, history, tradition, etc. but it has me wondering as brands have changed over time Dodge Brothers now is Fiat but started as one of the big 3 etc?

Lookin forward to your guys theorys.

If you buy GM/Ford/Mopar a few more dollars stay in this country, but any purchases help the American economy in some way.

That's all I gotta say about that.

Tesla is a interesting story and I could see that as a modern day all american car, I dont have vast knowledge about all there part origins or build originations though. I can also see how the traditional big three may not be such a slam dunk anymore espcially the fiat situation. and I saw some interesting numbers on VW sales in this country as well.

I can tell you in my family we try to buy as much as possible as close to home as possible. I drive a Camaro, made in Canada, and my next vehicle will also be a made in Canada choice as well. If you really want to help you local economy then start by cutting Walmart out of your stores you spend money at.

But, I will buy my next Camaro from the US factories happily as I do enjoy my time visiting my good neighbours South of the boarder whenever I can.

Probably Ford considering they pioneered so many things including the modern automobile and assembly line.

And the most American thing, is people in the USA forgetting they are just one country on one of two continents called 'America'. Like, can you imagine if they renamed, say, the people's republic of China, to 'the people's republic of Asia', and started calling themselves 'asian'? Can you imagine how confused/pissed the rest of Asia would be? Haha

I think you mentioned it in your opening post, but with so many foreign countries supplying parts or assembling cars today, I fall back on where the company is based.

Ford = American
Toyota = Japan

I consider Ford a truly American car company. But who knows?

I'd have to agree with tesla. I know the batteries are even domesticly produced. They are making a huge plant outside reno.

And just how would boycotting the country's (and the world's) largest retail employer "help [the] local economy"?

We live in a global economy. It is not the 1930's anymore. Yes, GM and Ford are still American owned companies, but many of the products put into them are outsourced. Honda is Japanese, but has many huge plants in the US. Toyota is Japanese too, but also has huge plants in the US. The list goes on and on. My entire family has been GM for generations. I'll stick with that.

Actually Carl Benz (German) is credited with building the first modern gas engine powered car in 1886, and Charles and Frank Duryea were the first to produce multiple cars for sale to the public in the US (13 Duryeas were produced in 1896).

But, you're probably right if we're talking strictly mass-produce American made autos. And I guess we are.
