In a nutshell, it's all about traction.

Traction prevails over power where the rules of a particular game call for it.

The new Z06 vs that more anemic Nissan 4WD, in that latest Head to Head episode, is prime example to demonstrate this sadness.

Has anyone thought about why do Indy cars have paddle shifters much like the Camaro automatics? Should Indy cars have foot clutches as that would be faster and better?

Yes, they should. There, that settles that!

Don’t get me wrong as I enjoy the pleasure and gratification that comes with a manual transmission while driving through a hilly, curved mountain side.I see positives with both types of transmissions.I live in Seattle with a lot of hills and traffic so I preferred the automatic so I could enjoy the car more than change the gears all the freaken time. Why not let technology do the work for me and the simple fact that it can do it faster than I can manually? As performance goes, my auto kicks butt! I don't race at the track so I'm not concerned about 1 or 2 tenths of a second if there is a difference. Whether it is an automatic or manual, enjoy the car for what it is, which is a beautiful piece of engineering and forget the "caveman" mentality that you need to have a manual transmission with a sports car.

In one of the latest Head to Head episodes http://youtu.be/F5F18o8xayA , where they pit the new 2015 Z06 vs the Nissan GT-R Nismo, something slightly unexpected happens in the end with Randy Pobst, hell, even at the very start when they 0-60/1/4 mile them. The much more anemic AND heavier Nissan still beats the Z06 !

Getting to the point here, that Z06 had the 7 speed manual whilst the Nissan had 100% electro goodies goodness going for it on that Streets of Willow Springs track, so many would ask, why didn't they use a Z06 with the auto version instead to make it more equal? Randy though did make an interesting note towards the end of the video, that the Z06 barely lost any time with the manual 7 speed under his hands. The car simply lacked traction, and was all over the place compared to the GT-R Nismo.

I still would have liked to have seen them use a non-stick Z06 for their straight line 1/4 mile times vs the GT-R, as this is where any auto shines imho, and that is from a dead stop. Add 4WD to this, and you got the ultimate McDonalds ride!!!

BTW, that Head to Head was very disappointing to me

  1. Layout
    • The L99 and LS3 engines are both built on the same platform, featuring 6.2L of displacement and eight cylinders. The camshaft of the L99 engine has slightly less duration than the one found in the LS3, giving the Camaro SS paired with this motor a smoother ride. The compression ratio of the L99 motor is 10.4:1, as the pistons have valve reliefs machined in the top halves of the pieces. The LS3's compression ratio is 10.7:1.

I didn't know that camshafts effect ride quality. You learn something new every day!

Ha!

You M6 folks keep bad-mouthing the A6s yet, stock on stock and pedal to the metal they beat you in the quarter mile every time (even while the A6 driver is eating a burger). Too bad... so sad.

By the way, I prefer 2 McDoubles and a large Hazelnut iced coffee. Less than $5 and easy to handle with my free hand!

Maybe the article refers to the idle being smoother? I test drove an auto Camaro SS and a Chevy SS and thought their auto gear transmissions performed well. Tuning them with HP tuners transforms the car.

Damn, Buzz... how old are you? GM started putting hydraulically controlled Hydra-Matic transmissions in their Oldsmobile and Cadillac cars in 1940.

I hear ya though. I learned to drive with "three on the tree" and never drove an automatic until my Dad bought a '68 Dodge Coronet. I distinctly remember riding home from the dealer with him. He stopped at a red light and after he took off he stepped on "that damned wide brake pedal" (thinking of having a clutch) and almost put me through the windshield. At least he didn't jam the column shift lever into Park.

I love my A6 Camaro.

The biggest reason the Z06 lost is because the GTR is an all wheel drive car. It also costs about $50K more than the Vette. Plus, anyone making a comparison between the dual clutch transmission in a GTR and an try hydro type automatic in a camaro is making a big mistake. The auto in the new Vettes is a night and day difference as well to that in the Camaro.
