Rented a 'Vert

I just got back from a week in Floriduh and rented a 2015 2SS/RS 'vert for the week. I loved the 'vert part, especially since it was 80+ every day! This however swayed me against ever purchasing a used vehicle that had previously been in a rental fleet. No one ever told us we needed to run premium fuel in this Camaro. I put 89 in it while we had the car but it did seem to run fine on it. We did not beat on this car and returned it cleaner than when we picked it up. The top seemed slow going up and down and didn't open completely enough to suit me on the passenger side. It just made me wonder how many people had been jacking with the top and what kind of fuel had been put in the car.

Having this car for a week also convinced me that I really do prefer the 10-13 model years, refresh just not for me! (I tried, really)

Lots of convertible rentals running around southern Floriduh and man those new mustangs are funky looking!

Reminds me of the time I was given a brand new Chevy Volt as a loaner. I was told I don't need to worry about anything regarding the charging, just put gas in.

I filled it up with regular just before I got to the dealership.

A week later I read an article about how Chevy redesigned the Volt, and now it doesn't have to take Premium fuel anymore.

I hope that doesn't cause problems from for the person who buys it.

Premium is recommended for the SS but you can run it on regular or mid grade. It won't hurt the car, the computer retunes the engine to compensate for the lower octane. Basically you just don't have quite the same horsepower.

I bought a Camaro because I was shopping for a convertible first. Once you put that top down, it's hard to accept a fixed roof coupe.

I know on the Camaro SS, the computer compensates for the lower octane if you put lower than premium fuel in it. To get it back up to it's premium performance level there's a fuse pull to reset the system.

I rent a ton of cars, rental miles are like 10 miles to our 1 mile.. They beat the tar out of them.

I know about that but my point is would you want to buy a used one with 20K miles on it that had been run on premium all the time or one run an a little of this and that.

Its not going to make any difference, just do the fuse pull and it will be right back where it should be with premium. I would be more worried about how it was driven over what octane gas they used.

I'll bite on that - had a '85 Z-28 that I'd rented from a major company. Tried to make it fly over a bridge in Ft. Lauderdale. Long story short - careless driving ticket - totaled car - company tried to sue me / sent me a letter saying I owed them $9500. I showed it to my attorney. I had purchased the collision damage waiver and they had no case. Next time I tried to rent from them the lady at the counter told me I was on the " do not rent " list. LOL !

I rented a 2013 SS vert out in Phoenix for a week long stay in Sedona. I could tell that thing was run on regular. I actually started filling it up with premium and did the fuse pull and it was a pretty noticeable difference.

I paid for the fuel at the start and I know they put regular back in it, lol.

The drop top was nice, but this car had 30k miles on it and it was pretty well abused I think. The top made terrible squeaky noises over bumps, probably from all the dust getting into it. We took it a bit off-road (just gravel bumpy roads) but nothing to beat it up. I actually didn't mind the automatic too bad either, the flappy paddles were sure better than a regular automatic.

I put a 1k miles on that car myself in a week, and it was totally worth it.

exactly.

Unlike older performance engines that really REQUIRED high octane gas, most modern performance engines need it for best performance but have the capability of switching to a low octane table as a protection method.

Many people take this to mean premium is unnecessary though, "I put 87 in it last week and it didn't spark knock or anything!" and that's just not true. If you want the most out of the car, it needs 91+

I was talked into buying a former rental car one time. It came out of Florida, and was a Hertz rental. I kept it for a year then sold it. Every time it would rain hard the water would pour in the driver's side door and I would get wet. I never did get it fixed. I figured even though Carfax said no accident damage it had to have been wrecked and not fixed right.
