First day at the track in my ZL1

I experienced my first HPDE at Hallett Saturday. There were 40 cars with only two of us driving Camaro's, both ZL1's. Besides my two days at spring mountain I've never had more fun and hooked!

I ran stock pads and rotors with Motul 600 fluid, and stock tires. I was shocked at how well they held up throughout the day, especially the tires. The rest of the car is far from stock as I replaced the sways and springs with a Detroit Speed upgrades and went to solid cradle bushings in rear and other items that I've lost track of. I dont have a before and after comparison on this setup as this was the first time in the car except for street driving.

I started the day with my 91 tune (680/680) and it ran well then I added some 104 and bumped the tune to race fuel tune (760/760) for the last two sessions and all went really well, no cooling issues at all thanks to larger HX and oil cooler. Several guys told me I had too much power but I'm finding out how wrong they are as once I get better pads and rotors and track tires this car will be a serious beast. I'm excited about getting more experience and instruction.

There were some sleepers in the group, one older driver in a Cobalt SS that whispered his way to the top each session, unbelievable. There were several incredible drivers in uUnsuspecting cars, quite humbling. Lots of mustangs and 350/370 Z's and of course Miatas. It's a monthly event so if you're in the oklahoma area come and help me out!

Sounds like you had a blast!

I took my V6 Camaro about 4 times to the track and got hooked as well. After upgrading to the 1LE suspension and SS Brembo's along with other things I throw in the towel and got the ZL1.

My first track day with the ZL1 was at the streets if willow a few months ago. I discovered the ZL1 is too powerful for such a small track. I've signed up for Fontana Speedway in May, that should allow me to open the ZL1 up on the ROVAL and see what see can do.

What PTM mode did you run if you don't mind me asking?

Normal sport mode , I accidentally ran first session in touring mode lol

Hallett has 3 good straights that allow for 90-100mph so the extra power comes in handy passing

longer straights when you are wide open throttle for more time will equate to higher temps. With an oil cooler, you are much better than most. A track with long straights like VIR, speeds can get to over 150 on the back straight and over 140 on the front.

From the sounds of it, we are pretty close with our mods. I am waiting to try out the track for the first time. Any Advice? What tire Pressure did you run? Thanks, for sharing you experience.

First thing is unload all loose stuff out of your car front to back, floor mats etc. Get a box or milk crate etc for you misc stuff you might need at track and get to track early early and get in line for inspection. Take white shoe polish so you can put # on your window instead of using painters tape on the door. Air pressure, depending on morning temps I would start out at 30 cold max with stock goodyears. I started at 34 cold and topped at 40lbs at the end of last afternoon session and air temp was only 72 degrees. I will say that I didn't notice any wear or traction issues at 40lbs hot. Take your valve caps off when you get to the track, especially if they're metal. Don't overfill engine oil if anything be a half at low ... Hopefully some of the others will weigh in with their experience

Switch out dot3 brake fluid if you haven't already.

You should start with pressures at 27-28 psi which usually means 37-38psi hot. Shorter tracks usually require higher starting pressures.
