Engine cover and engine bay wall torn up, what could have caused this?
So I went to refill my wiper fluid the other day and discovered that my engine cover looked like this.
At first I thought that pile was an animal that had been chopped up by the engine, but it is actually the material of the rear part of the engine cover and the back wall of the engine bay. My first thought was that something crawled in there to keep warm and got hungry, but I live in Florida and it's been pretty warm lately. I had opened the engine bay fairly recently too so this had happened within the last couple weeks. I doubt that the car could have done this to itself, no moving parts could have contacted those areas, and I know I can get a new engine cover for not much. Do you thing that back part ft the engine bay needs to be looked at or should it be fine to keep driving (not sure if that's the firewall or not). This Is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen. Thanks in advance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

That definitely looks like something a furry little critter would do. It's spring and animals are looking for materials to make a nest. My guess is a squirrel or rat. I live on a ranch and if a car is parked to long, that happens. And most of the time they'll eat a couple wires too. I would check all your wires and lines just in case.
I have to keep my car in a sealed garage. |

My guess is also some rodent eating at it. I always find mouse nests and dog food inside of air filter boxes around here

Check the wiring. Rodents love to chew on them. Short term...set a rat trap on top of your engine cover...long term...Time for a mouser or two.

Critters for sure. Tape Bounce Dryer Sheets in sliced sandwich bags to the back of each
shock tower. I also keep them under my seats and in the glove box. We used to get these guys in our cars all the time but not any more.... It works.

You might want to inspect your air filter, too. Sometimes they crawl through the air intake and leave nuts & food in the filter housing. You could put down some pepper spray on the tires to discourage them from returning.

Engine cover and engine bay wall torn up, what could have caused this?
I actually did find rat poop In the engine bay while inspecting it today. I didn't see any chewed wires or tubes (heard from and exterminator that rats are far less likely to chew wires than squirrels so I'm glad it was a rat). I'll check the air filter housing tomorrow too (maybe will be a good excuse to get a CAI lol). Pepper spray seems like a good idea, could anyone explain that dryer sheet thing a little more?

I had one of these guys chew up the cowl wiring harness on a new Mercedes. Repairs cost
our insurance company over $6,000.00, and that was over 10 years ago.
