Which oil filter?
The owners manual specifies the UPF-48R (GM 12626224) but the track prep sheet that we have been using as gospel states PF64 (GM 12640445) or else engine damage may occur.
Soooooooooo, which one is the RIGHT one? TIA. |

PF-64 is what I have understood to be the correct filter. If any other filter is on the engine and something happens, the warranty will be void. The track prep guideline sheet is GM's step by step resource and has not been altered since it was issued. The owner's manual has been known to have mistakes in it. I ordered the PF-64 from Amazon as my local Autozone or Advance Auto did not stock it. C7 corvette guys went through a similar issue with the owners manual and factory installed filters not having the same part #. I am changing my oil very soon and will confirm what filter is on the car from the factory. It should have a factory installed PF-64 if everything stated is accurate.

The UPF 48R has been used on the LS7 for years. Can't imagine it would be a problem now.
The LS7 went to it because of the thicker can for higher pressure. I don't know why anything else would be used. |

The 48r is designed to have a higher pressure rating. The 64 is the same fit as the 48 with a larger capacity.

OK, after some research and discussion with a knowledgeable tech at the dealer, UPF-48R seems to be the superior filter. It indeed has the thicker can for higher pressure and he thought it looked like it would flow better. The PF-64 has some extra valving in it and is larger capacity but is more like the regular line of filters. He thought UPF-48R was the one to use and recommended it. It was also the one that we took off the car. I would guess that Chevy couldn't possibly blame you for using the filter called for in the manual and the one that the car came with from the factory.

If that paper for Z/28 says use a PF-64...that's what I'm using. At least there is a paper trail for them to follow if something happens engine related. It will remove any guesswork or questions about a "possible wrong oil filter" issue.

UPF-48R is the recommended filter for the GM dry sump engines (LS9/LS7/LS3 versions). I haven't been under my car yet, so not sure what is installed from the factory, but wouldn't it make sense to just replace it with the same one that the car came with?

makes sense but you know how stupid things become if a GM representative gets involved with a warranty claim. I am going to change my oil this weekend and take a picture of the factory oil filter and go from there. I honestly think either filter could be used.

The thing is, that paper doesn't have an official document number on it. Where did the paper originate from? The manual is quite clear that the 48R is the correct one for the LS7, and the one on my car was a 48R. I feel better going with the official document (manual) that came with the car but I've been wrong before

Please note: This engine uses a special high-performance oil filter (PF64, General
Motors P/N 12640445) and use of any other filter may lead to filter failure and/or severe engine damage

I called and asked... why the different filter for racing.
Heard back later, higher capacity for cornering. Smaller filter empties too fast when used in high speed cornering. So there you have it, for road course racing you want to use a high capacity filter. Why a road racing car didn't come with a high capacity filter would be another good question. Somebody else can ask that one. |
