A lot of 5 channel amps will just use the rear input so it doesn't require an additional RCA cable. For my JL XD700/5 I only used a front set and a rear set - so 2 RCA cables

Can somebody explain something? To hook up a sub amplifier to a five channel amp, I would just use the sub RCA connection from the 5 channel, right? But how about on the other side of the amp, where you connect other wires (tied with a screw)? Where those wires come from, or go to?
Also, if I have a 4 channel amp, how would I connect an amp for the sub? Thanks. |

5 channel amps have one channel dedicated for a sub. And they will also have the speaker inputs on them. To get signal to the sub channel you use a rca y splitter and it uses signal from the rear channels and splits it to the sub channel. In the pic below I showed where you would put your left rear and right rear rca cables. And in this next one I showed where you would attach your speaker wire from your sub. hopefully that helps. For a 4 channel and a separate sub amp you would do the same thing, except your rca and speaker inputs are on a separate amp.

Great. Thanks.
I get it with the 5 channels amp and the sub, but what if I am using the 5 channel plus another separate amp for the sub? Where to I get the signal to the sub amp. Do I even need a 5 channel if I have a separate one for the sub? |

I have had different systems in my 2012 Camaro, one with a 4 channel amp and a subwoofer amp and one with a 5 channel amp.
I like the 5 channel amp better, as you only need one set of power, ground and remote wires, and the newer 5 channel amps are relatively small in size which gives you more mounting options. Most are full range class D amps, which makes them very efficient and lowers the current requirements for the charging/battery system in the car. |
