dealer asked me if I wanted mine switched and I said no, nothing to sign.
On another note not related to a key fob, but did anyone come across one of these. Last edited by CAM....ZL1; 01-21-2015 at 08:53 PM. |

I tried to get my knee to hit the key and shut the car off while in the driveway.....I couldnt do it. I dont see how this was a cause of peoples accidents. I question how many keys they had attached to weight them down

When we purchased our 12' ZL1 in November the recall had already been done on it. I just went to my parts dept guys at work and had them order me 2 brand new fobs and they came as the switchblade setup. No modding required.

I took my fobs back in and had them redo it back from the recall to original switchable. No problem.

A locksmith had the switchblade blanks in stock. He cut it and installed in in my key fob for under $30.00.

So I can't just cut up one of my good keys and put it in there. I started looking for options that don't involve paying over $100 for a key. The best option I found so far is to buy a switchblade and fob on ebay then have it cut and hope that in able to program it using the method of starting the car with a current key then restarting it with the new key. So today I decided to see if I can find someone to cut the key for me. I went to the hardware store and they said they couldn't. So I went to the local locksmith. He immediately recognized that the recall had been done and said he would not cut a new switch blade to reverse the recall because he did not want to be responsible if something happens. He wouldn't even do it on a blank key for me to switch in on my own. But he said he would order me a new keyless fob and program it for the low cost of $75. I told him no thanks. Hopefully I can find somewhere willing to do it. |

I wasn't sure if the recall key would be the same as the fob key if I tore it apart until I found this post. It took me about 20 minutes to remove the key and install it back into the fob. I had to find something to use for the roll pin as the dealer kept it when they removed the key from the fob. Then I used some locktite super glue to help it stay in place and it worked perfect! I also kept the other recall key intact to use when I have to go in for service.

All you have to do is pry the plastic part of the key apart. The metal of the key fits perfectly into the fob....no modification at all. Then, get a small piece of metal to wedge into the hole to keep it from sliding back out. I used a finish nail.

I'm going to try this tonight! I suspect the pin had better sit tightly. If it comes out, you may lose your key inside the ignition!
The way I sit, my knee would never hit the fob if it were setup as the switchblade, but with it as is, the fob ends up sitting on my knee and when i lift off the gas it ends up pinching the fob against my knee and the key and i have to angle my knee out to let off the gas. Way more dangerous like they gave it to me than it would have been in the switchblade form.
