I still use maps to plan vacations, but I don't see how that replaces onstar. Do your maps call 911 when you're incapacitated in an accident? Or instantly get your wife into her car when she locks herself out in a dark parking lot somewhere? Do maps get you a discount on your car insurance? Find your car when its stolen? Directions is just a tiny piece of what onstar does, and not what I subscribe for.

I put it on in the summer, then suspend in the winter when it is parked. I also only get lock out, tracking and disable ability of stolen, and emergency detection. App works that way. I don't have the nav or calling options, they are of. Only $9.99/mo for what I have and for 6 months...$60 is cheap for peace of mind. I keep this service on my DD's too.

LOL I remember the road atlas! Now it is all on the My Link, Garmin, iPhone, or iPad! No reason to ever be lost again!

It's amazing that entire generation never knew life without cellphones and computers. Sure, sometimes it was inconvenient looking around for a payphone, or using a map... but it was also a whole lot more private and relaxing.

IDK. I have mixed feelings about it. Mine will expire soon as well. However, I think about it like this. If you have the RS or paid for the Nav ready mylink then I think you should consider keeping on-star. If you don't you paid $700 just to push AM/FM and use Bluetooth. Then again I don't like Chevy adds on a $700 Nav Ready Mylink then wants us to pay monthly to use it!!!! it ticks me off! But that's life

They are ok but they don't do anything my phone cant already do.
GPS, music over auxiliary port, phone over auxiliary port
or bluetooth if you have the option which is just a of a push button.

Insurance discount is more than cost of it, so I keep it. They need to quit with the expiring minutes for the phone though, that's just stupid. Not that I ever use it but who has expiring minutes anymore..

Waste of money to me.

I like the Turn By Turn navigation, and the location service if my car is ever stolen. My wife likes the 911 part of it... My thought is, I paid a lot of money for all this fancy shit, so I might as well utilize it!

My wife had taken my car one year (which had onstar installed on it) on a trip to Myrtle Beach with a friend. She called me and wanted to know where they were, and where the next exit was that had good food and lodging. My wife is not too technology savy.... I got onto the Onstar app, did the location service and saw where the vehicle was. I then went into Yelp and my Marriott apps, found where they needed to go, and then sent it to the car. Turn by turn navigation got them to where they needed to be.
Well worth the money to me.

I have the Safe & Secure plan (still called that?). During the week, I park in a commuter train lot for about 10 hours, so there's some peace of mind. Plus the app is great for log distance control.

Sadly, I don't think people are better off in the overall sense for having so many conveniences, and so many securities against "what-if" scenarios not only available but actively pushed or even forced upon us. Never mind that conveniences that can leave you needing still other conveniences obviously have their own downsides (I'm mainly thinking of the 'locked the keys inside situations here).

Trouble is, just understanding the concept of self reliance is kind of difficult unless you already have it. Used to be that you'd kind of grow into having it, kind of like wisdom. Now there seem to be people who regard this as being unnecessary. Their loss . . . there is peace of mind in having this, too.

I completely agree. I never wanted onstar. Just have not removed box since the blue tooth is tied too it and I haven't upgraded my radio yet.

I have yet to pay the full price for Onstar in any of my vehicles. Every time it comes up for renewal, I call them up and negotiate a price.. That is all you have to do...
