Same question I have, I have driven a manual all my life between cars and motorcycles, and this is the way I have always done it. The only car that I ever destroyed the clutch in was my blazer, but I did a lot of beating on that vehicle for a lot of miles...

Coasting in neutral is bad because of the unequal rotations between the input and output shafts of the transmission while the car is in motion. You can do whatever you want, I'm just throwing out a few pointers.

As for the skip-shift dilemma you're experiencing, try picking up a skip shift eliminator or try riding out your gears a little longer. It will eventually go away. One of the first things I installed after bringing the car home was the skip shift eliminator, followed by the borla exhaust.

I've driven manuals only for quite some time now.. Actually I've never owned an auto. But most of the time this car is super smooth when it comes to shifting throught the gears. It does take a little bit of slipping the clutch if you are trying to drive real smooth and easy. The only issue I've noticed is the fast shift from 1st to 2nd under heavy acceleration.. I can shift pretty damn fast but it's almost as if something is trying to block my shift when I do it really fast.. Almost like the skip shift thing.. I've actually slam shifted through it a couple times but it doesn't sound good, lol I have the skip shift eliminator I'm gonna install soon, did any of you notice this issue before or any difference after the skip shift was eliminated?... I actually think I can shift my cobalt faster from 1to2 with more consistency..

I don't think it's just a 1LE problem. I've had the same issue with 1st to 2nd back when I had my 2011 SS. I think it's just the nature of the beast that is the SS M6 setup.

What do you mean by this?

So you are saying that I shouldn't be at low rpm in a high gear? Does that mean if I'm in 5th braking to a stop, I should be down shifting on the way?

When you're stopped at a red light, it's a good habit to keep the cluch disengaged while your waiting at the light. Say an emergency vehicle is approaching or another car is heading in your direction out of control. By having the clutch disengaged and a gear selected, It reduces your reaction time to get out of the way.

Ok yeah my habit is too hold in on clutch pedal, not keep it neutral, at stop lights.

As far as the smoothness for shifts between gears this is what works for me. Initially, after not driving a manual for years, I would push the clutch to the floor, shift gears, come back up off the clutch. This would almost always give me a jerky shift feel.

I have found that if I only depress the clutch a little past the have way point, enough to disengage the clutch, and then come back up with the pedal my shifts are much smoother. It all takes a little practice, you will find what works best for you soon enough.

I test drove a manual trans car yesterday and was reminded of a problem I had with my '01 Silverado. What I found was a spring in the clutch pedal assembly. As the clutch is pressed in, you are compressing this spring. Then as you pass the halfway point the spring begins to help you with the pressing. I cut the spring out and the clutch was so much smoother. It didn't feel like an on off switch anymore. Someone should crawl up under the dash and check out this theory. It was an awesome mod on my truck.

You're saying to take out the return spring ?

Study it's operation carefully. I don't think that is it's purpose. I rigged a spring between the pedal arm and the dash to make sure the pedal didn't put any pressure on anything. The idea is to create a linear feel to the clutch pedal, not the notchy factory feeling. The car I drove was a V6, but I suspect the V8 is the same.

Can anyone take a picture?

Keeping the clutch in all the time puts unneeded pressure on your thrust bearing in the engine. That leads to thrust failures over time.

I just drove around, and let the clutch slip more than I had been and was a lot smoother!

I revved all the way to 7k rpm I think in 2nd and all of a sudden my acceleration disappeared and made me jerk forward in the seat. I guess it was just because the computer stopped the throttle completely and made it feel like that? I thought at first I over revved and broke something, scared me.

How bad is it too accidentally hit whatever the top rpm is right before shifting? The computer should prevent you from doing any damage right? It's only on the down shifting that can really over rev and break something?
