Replacing the engine while the car is in lease might open you up to additional liability or specific requirements for engine replacement as part of the lease terms. I'd read the agreement carefully. I'd be more apt to hand the dealer the keys, pay the losses, and let them deal with the repairs.
Big lesson learned, eh? |

Good used LLT engine is $1500 range. You will have a heck of a time swapping in a LFX which requires the Deplhi ECU and harness vs the Bosch LLT unit.
Also, there are no plug wires on the LLT or LFX engines...they have coil on plug configuration. |

Live and learn, personally I have never heard of modding a leased car that much, especially tuning one. I think that is where they got you on not covering the warranty, which makes sense really. Good luck with the whole situation!! |

So why do you think the engine is bad anyways? A head gasket on most cars does not require a new engine, except for those pesky northstar POS engines.
And finding oil in the coolant is not usually indicative of a head gasket, but rather a leak within the radiator from the oil cooler... Don't go blowing money on an engine when you must need coils or an ECM. Can you revert the tune to normal? It's always possible that's the problem, or even some faulty wires. Did you check compression? If it's good I wouldn't suspect internal engine problems, though misfiring and running hot can ruin the engine. If it's been overheated after that cooling system problem then of course it could have a head gasket problem. Get a chemical block test from NAPA or something if you know how to do it... Check the oil for water, not the water for oil. Also did they decline fixing the radiator hose popping off? If the tune didn't cause the overheating problem, but the defective hose or clamp did and it was never modified... it should still be under warranty. They have to prove it was related to the tune, and cooling systems are hardly touched when modding except for low temp thermostats which I don't think you changed. |

first thing I'd do is get the stock tune put back on.
sounds like you might have some overheating issue... might be related to tune or something else. you could just have a coolant leak somewhere. |

I have found 13' LFX used engines with less that 10k for $1200 shipped to my door.

Lets start from the begining........ there is absolutely no indication that you need a new engine so don't make your decision to give the car back and take a $6,000 loss because of an assumption. Troubleshoot and find out what the problem is then decide.

Keep in mind that he leased this car. That means he only paid to use it for so many years/miles. When he returns it, it needs to be worth the agreed upon value at the time of lease. A car with a used/replaced engine is not what the dealership will be expecting come end of lease. It will hurt the resale value of that car, and they'll expect him to cough up the difference or buy the car.
I would fix the engine that's already in it. I think the dealership is trying to rip him off instead of fixing the car.

Edit: just checked my oil dipstick. Seems a little to dry,I don't see anything leaking but dryer than it's been in the past. I just got an oil chnage maybe less than 500 miles ago Last edited by moE_09; 05-06-2015 at 02:51 PM. |

Moe, you are in NY. There has to be a shop or dealer that can figure out your problem. I would ask around, check with the local Camaro club and get the car in the right hands. Someone can fix it and most likely without a new engine. Good luck.

Find a good independent mechanic to properly asses the condition of the engine. Maybe there is a reasonably inexpensive fix to the problem. Good luck.
