Tire noise and rear end howl??
I have a ZL1 and I'm hearing 2 different sounds. First is the cycling, low end rubbing/grinding, that sounds like it's coming from the passenger side. This only happens between 10-45mph. It doesn't matter if I'm on or off the brakes, accelerating or decelerating, or driving straight or turning. Also, the faster I go, the faster the cycling sound, and the slower I go, the slower the sound.
The second sound is a higher pitched howl coming from the rear and is audible mostly on cruising speeds, anywhere between 35-70mph, but only when I'm decelerating. As soon as I even touch the gas, it stops. It's not very loud, but it's noticable. I took my car to the dealership and had a tech ride with me. The way he was talking, he seemed to be the guy that worked on the high end vettes and Camaros. The first sound he noticed was the cycling sound, which he immediately said, "That sounds like your tires." Could it be I have a flat spot or maybe something wrong? He couldn't say exactly, but he told me it is very unlikely that it could be the brakes or a bearing. He said as long as it doesn't affect your handling or traction, I wouldn't worry about it, and it should go away once you change your tires. I personally don't want to spend $300 per tire just to maybe find out that's what was wrong. What do you guys think? The second noise he heard was the rear howl. He said it was gear lash causing this sound. He also said he doesn't think it would be warranty work (like changing the fluid) so I shouldn't bother with it, because it's not very loud and shouldn't affect anything. Basically, I know both of these sounds are not normal, and I don't want to wait til they get worse or cause serious damage. What is everyone else's thoughts? Do you think those are the problems?

I had rear end howl in my 2010 just like you describe, only when decelerating. They replaced my rear differential under warranty. The fluid was low and had tons of metal shavings in it, that's how I knew what the problem was. Mine was a V6 though.

I think I figured out what the cycling sound is that's coming from my front passenger side wheel. I jacked the car up yesterday and noticed an uneven tire wear. I checked to see if it was a bad wheel bearing by trying to rock the wheel back and forth. Nothing. I'm thinking my alignment is a little off because of the uneven tire wear, which is most likely what is causing that cycling sound. I'm thinking an alignment will help, but won't fix the noise issue because of the tire. When I eventually replace the tire, hopefully the sound will go away.

yea the sound on deceleration sounds like it could be the diff. check the fluid and the pinion nut (if it has one).

When I get the alignment fixed, I'm going to have them change the fluid too.

You have a differential issue. Fluid change with friction modifier might help, but when there's an issue with the gears, you usually have a coasting noise or an accel noise. Draining the fluid should tell you something based on how much metal comes out.

Know it's been a week, but the diff noise is a known issue on the ZL1 There is a TSB out for it. It involves several fluid changes and a driving procedure between each. Tell dealer to look up PIP5097 or TSB 3331992.

Yeah I read about the TSB on another thread. I'll be bringing it up especially if they try to charge me for it.
