Of all the improvements I have made to my Camaro, I think getting the hill assist removed might have been the one that most contributed to enjoying my car more. Paid $55 shipped for a used one off eBay, and it worked great.

If on the fence, do this. LoneCynic -- I suspect you just got a faulty part.

I too have joined the ranks of us that know how to drive a manual and ditched the pain in the A$$ nanny. Even my wife is supper happy about it.

GM, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND COUNTRY STOP IT, OR AT LEAST GET IT RIGHT!

I've been wanting to change it but I feel like it's a waste of $55 so for now I slightly raise the parking brake handle whenever I know the HSA is about to turn on.

Smile HSA Gone!

Thank you for this thread! I recently bought a 2013 Hot Wheels Edition and the HSA is a severe danger to anyone who knows how to drive a stick. I have 36 years of it and the inability to disable the Hill Nanny is an unbelievable engineering mistake. Replacing the Yaw sensor took me an hour, but the benefits will live on forever.

Excellent writeup! Took me two hours from gathering tools to cleanup. The extra time was because I was reading the instructions on my phone which was dying. I counted on being able to plug it into my cars USB charger only to find out I had to disconnect it halfway in So I was running back and forth to the kitchen where it was plugged in.

If you are the type of person who doesn't mind changing your own oil, then you can do this job easily. Just be careful popping the plastic tinnerman clips loose. And a right angle screwdriver with a #2 sized phillips screwbit makes the job much easier. This one is a little pricey but you can beat up on it like it's a tool and not worry about it breaking like the little cheap black ones from Harbor Freight (which is what I used and it worked fine for this job):

FINALLY did this 4 yrs later ...why did I wait so long Wasn't bad at all. Took a good hr+ and I was really taking my time that included attaching the GEN5DIY Dash ABL Harness in the center console while I had it open. In fact what took the longest was re-attaching the guage pack/shifter trim because of the space the ABL harness took up.

TIPS
- Move seats all the way back to remove side panels

- Move seats all the way foward to lift up console rear

- Move seats all the way back to get at YAW sensor

- Lift console lid up and use a long phillips#2 to get to the bottom 2 rear screws.

- No need to unplug anything or remove the entire console. Just lift and prop up the console rear ~5/6 inches. Gives you enough room to remove the YAW sensor

- Use a thin socket extension to get to the YAW sensor bolts. Just not enough room to fit socket wrench head without an extention.

Worked right away. No more fnnn HSA

I especially want to thank the OP for finding out and pionerring this and the others who provided their experience feedback.

GM personnel who approved this should be summarily dismissed. As some other poster said GM should have designed HSA to release the brakes instantanously when detecting that the clutch and brake pedal have been released combined with an increase in rpms ... if they fnnn program that CAGS sh*t ( gear, rpms & engine temp) they could have done this too! At the very least they should have displayed a red LED on the top middle of the dash trim to get and keep your attention along with the DIC msg until it released the brake.

Sorry for bring this thread back to life again, but I have to say that if this works, it has to be one of the best inexpensive mods for these cars, and I wish I had come across it years ago.

My car, due to its motor and cam, can be a tad of a nuisance to drive in particular situations. When on hills, its harder to find the proper gas clutch combo to smoothly take off as we all know is the case with cammed/modded cars...but when the stupid hill assist is thrown into the mix, it complicates things even more.

OP, thanks for posting. I'm ordering mine now.

After reading all 10 pages, it appears that only one person was having issues after installing the automatic sensor and his car was a 2015. He mentioned though that after switching back to his stock sensor, the issues he was having went away. I figure for $70-80 bucks, this is at least worth a shot.

Swapping mine out tomorrow when the replacement one gets here. I got the stock one out tonight and ready for the replacement to be put in without the lateral etc. stock Hill assist sensor on mine appears to have now failed because I get hill assist kicked on even on flat surface. Hill assist kicked on just pulling in my garage that is completely flat ground. Can’t wait to do this mod and fully delete the hill assist junk. I can’t see how this stupid junk even was agreed to be put in production unless it was to accommodate the dummies in the world who can’t drive a manual transmission on a hill. Honestly if someone can’t drive a manual transmission on a hill without this hill assist crap then they need to learn how, not inconvenient the rest of us! I feel this hill assist crap also takes a toll on the clutch life.

Think all it took me was less than a month before the HSA and skip shift was addressed on mine. Complete Garage

This works great! Wish I did it few years ago! Stinks you can’t just tune the hill assist out and have to swap the sensors to delete the hill assist but I’m happy as hell that junk is now gone!
