Excellent write up angryBITS.
Interesting mention of the CTS-V, the ONLY reason I didn't get a V is because my wife wanted a convertible. But obviously they are distinctly different types of vehicles. I think the V could be as fast a car in pretty much every way and I love cooled seats. |

I traded a GT500 for the 1LE and the ONLY thing i miss is the no questions asked warranty repairs. The GT500 is fast going straight, hope you don't need to turn though.

these cars are both awesome but in my mind trying to make them head to head competitors like the guys on the internet insist they are is where people go wrong.
my advice on cars is usually buy the car that really draws you. I was drawn to both cars though. For me my choice was just in the fact adding power to LS is simple. I am $1800 in with 6-7 hours of my time and I am up 90hp. now I am not saying my car is faster than gt500 in a strait line yet but it really a drivers race from a dig. $1800 into the shelby's handling and you won't be anywhere near balanced and comfortable. there clutch and axles are prone to issues as well which can cost you another 1-1.5kk not including labor. the resale on the Shelby is a bit better though an 700whp is attainable with bolt ons which is crazy. this is my all around fun car though an the zl1 is just a better all around driver. on the other side most would be pretty happy with either in there garage. don't forget to look at the new gt350. I think it will be like 53-54k MSRP with the tech pack or track pack. it will be a well balanced car as well but it will most likely get big brother-ed by the GT500 1/4 mile stock like the zl1 does.

As far as looks go, The Zl1
As far as speed go, the Gt500. I've test drove mustangs and I just don't like them to much, so I would go with the ZL1. If speed is a concern you can take your ZL1 to Lingerfelter and get it to 630hp for about 2k. Then do some more small mods and get to 650hp to be equal and still around the same cost.

I went from a 2011 Gt500 Vert to a 13 Zl1 vert most of the posts echo my opinion as well but here are a few different points.
Weight, My Zl1 weighs 4400 lbs compared to my similar loaded GT500 at 3950lbs. ZL1 masks the weight well but it still feels big and heavy in comparison. $$$, Compare the book value on a 2013 Zl1 and 13 GT500 on any site (Edmunds. KBB, NADA ). They will have the GT500 worth 7-8k more in value. Check Ebay or Autotrader, good luck finding a 13 Gt500 coupe under 50k and a vert under 55k no matter what miles are on it. End of the day, you have to be happy with the car you drive, some days I like the Zl1 better and other days I wish I had my gt500 back. |

With the amount of money you're going to save buying a ZL1 versus a GT500, you can use that extra 10k and put some serious power into the ZL1, which will then blow the GT500 out of the water. Plus, angrybits owned both of them, so I'd listen to him before anyone else. He made some great comparisons.
