BACKFIRE

Has anyone in countered an occasional backfire. When this happens the traction control service light comes on. The tachometer quits working and the check engine light comes on also. The code in the ECM is CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. The GM dealer is stumped also. Any advise would be helpful.

If it is a bad sensor, they should replace it under warranty. Why is the dealership stumped?

Hope its not the same problem they had back in the mid 90's with crankshaft sensors, they caused rough idle, no starts, etc.

Did the dealer try replacing the crank sensor? If they didn't and they are stumped I would try a new dealer...

I had an issue with mine- the wires were loose where they were crimped into the connector for the crank position sensor. They were loose enough so that the inop tach, service stabilitrak, hard start and rough running conditions were constant from the moment it happened, but I could see an intermittent problem persisting if the wires were just barely loose. Mine only had about 600 miles on it at the time and suddenly came on when I pushed the clutch in while in first gear in bumper to bumper traffic.

I am not sure what the dealer is doing. They are working right with GM now and they haven't updated me at all. Usually when the crankshaft sensor goes bad the engine just shuts off I think and then it will start in 30 min or so. It seem to start when I put the cat back Borla exhaust on. That shouldn't have anything to do with it. Lots of cars come stock with that exhaust on them. Thanks for the replies!!

I had one go out on my 2001 GMC truck and it never did refire. They had to replace it at the dealership and relearn the computer to read the proper engine crankshaft position. It only took an hour to fix it once they got started, but I was stuck on the side of the interstate in 105 degree Texas heat for 3 hours waiting for them to come get it on a Sunday afternoon.

I wonder if the ECM needs to be retuned for the new Borla exhaust? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

The only time my Camaro has backfired is when I was in manual mode and hit the rev limiter.

Yep and not one person stopped to help....... I was used to the heat having worked in a chemical plant but my wife was a different story. I was afraid she was going to have a heat stroke... We did have a cooler with water and ice in it...mostly water by the time the towtruck came.
