Man I was trying real hard not to respond to this thread but Ghostrider had to talk about an Impalla SS and reel me in.

The OP could not have said it better. We are very fortunate to have these Rides. I spent well over six figures on 2 land yachts turning them into 11 and 10 sec Daily drivers from 01' to 06'. Both became deadly street racers from a dig but a nightmare to maintain and keep running on the bottle.

Fast forward to present day and I'm making more power than both, daily drive with no issues, and don't get dirty trying to be a mechanic anymore. We are very lucky to have these Rides.

When I was a teenager.......The first car I bought while working at a gas station and saving what seemed like forever was a 1966 Chevelle SS 396, Muncie 4 speed. It had the 375 hp motor and you could almost pull the front end off the ground from a dead stop. Wish I had kept that car!

My first vehicle was a 72' Chevy pickup with a 350hp 350 and 4:11s, about the only guy in my small town that could beat it had a Supercharged Pontiac GXP. Then I built a hot little 383 and that was it.

Once nobody would race me anymore, I went an bought an old Caprice cop car for $400 and cut the exhaust off, it wasn't quite as fast as the pickup, but I knew who I could make my beer and gas money off of in that old dented pos that sounded like the wrath of hell.

Now there's kids there running around my old town in CTS-Vs and hot Diesels, but I get to go back every now and then and still show them what's up, most of the ones with the fast cars now are younger cousins that are always trying to come up with some idea on how to out run me lol.

If you can't tell, about the only thing we had to do on the weekends was to go racing at the dirt track on Friday nights then cruise the streets on Saturday nights. And about the worst trouble we got into was the judge making us call our parents if we came in with a ticket. But man that was way worse than just paying the $50-$60, It usually meant the weekend after, we were up at the ranch building fence or cleaning out corrals from the crack of dawn till mom called us in for dinner, after that we could go feed and if we were lucky we were done in time to go out and have a little fun.

I'm 55, so my era of muscle cars (we could afford) were 66-71 Mustangs, Chargers, Road Runners, Camaro's, Firebirds, Chevelle's. If you were lucky enough to get a big block....you ruled the street.

As a younger kid, parents friends had:
67 GT Mustang 271hp 289ci (Mom's car)
69ss Indy Pace camaro convertible 396
70 Plymouth 'Cuda 383
65 289 fastback Mustang
69 442 Olds 330ci
70 Torino 351

Bet we wish some of those cars were still around...

Of course modern cars will not only out run the old ones, but they corner and stop too! Not to mention much more reliable!

Right with you, I'm 54...my first car at 15 was a 70 Buick GNX, Stage 1 455....bought it in 76 for $1500, had been in the barn since the farmer had died in 71, had 500 miles on it...took it to the Performance Clinic in Dayton "build it" for me...I had worked on the family golf course since I was 12, so I was flush with money...repainted it midnight blue/black top, white interior. Drove it through HS.
Found a 69 GTO with no motor and bought it for 200 bucks in 79...found a Super Duty 455 out of a 74 TA and built it for the Goat...still have it today...A Semi hit and totaled the Buick in 80....bought parts for the goat...now she is a show piece.
I've had New cars since graduating college in 83...84 Fiero, 86 Fiero GT, 88 Mustang GT, 90 Chevy truck, 92, 96, 98, 2000, 2002, and 2012 Camaro's, and a New G8 and GTO....WHAT A RIDE!

I hadn't even considered the handling. I stepped from my ZL1 into my 4th gen SS, and it was like going from a corvette to a chevette... ok not that extreme. lol. I was thinking that the hp wars were coming to an end, but if you see what Porsche and Ferrari are doing with their hybrid technologies, the future may be looking even brighter than ever. Imagine to be able to cruise around town on batteries only, then hammer the gas to get a combined force of gas and electricity...man the future is going to be fun

I wish we had more of these threads across the muscle car world. Most of the communities I've seen have been hard on displacement and one-upping the next guy instead of mutual appreciation for great products across the board.

If you get a chance go on YouTube and search for the Motorweek channel. Look for their retro reviews. Have to believe the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times of some of the Muscle and sports cars they tested...
Also you can search for Car and Track videos, they have a lot of late 60's and early 70's muscle car tests, watching some of them on a road course will make you LOL...

Agreed, I believe in giving credit where it's due. A lot of folks can't think of a good reason for hating the other car companies other than "that's the way I was raised". I envy the guys with the GT500s and Hellcats, afterall I'm a horsepower junkie. I know we can all mod our rides to make as much power as we desire, but there's just something so cool about driving off the lot with a factory stock missile

Be careful your stories could turn it to a street racing thread and get the whole thing closed or deleted. Just some friendly advice.
