autoschool told me the new style EGR is exhaust valves staying open a lil longer letting exhaust gas back in the chamber to lower overall O2 content in the mix to use less fuel, cooler combustion, and lower nox content. but this was in 2006. engineers wanted less egr parts so the ex valves are utilized.

You guys aren't understanding the question. My neighbor had a couple of cats under his hood, when he started up the engine the intake sucked up all 18 lives of kitty and it ruined his engine. This is serious stuff!

There is such a thing as exhaust scavenging:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exha...ust_scavenging

So yes, pulling in some exhaust gases does happen, especially on hi-perf engines with tuned exhaust pulses.

All the way from the cat?
Hard to believe.

This guy's solo hfc's failed. I wouldn't want that stuff getting pulled back inside the engine. I recently purchased the ARH cat less down pipes, and plan on installing them along with a catch can. Probably the most important mods you can do.

I also figured that since the catalytic converters are so far down stream there wouldn't be a good chance of getting catalytic converter material migrating up past the exhaust valves. But there's another member from the thread I posted in my last comment that got catalytic converter material at least to the valves resulting in an expensive repair.

Well that's just it. Some motors have the cats bolted right to the exhaust manifolds. That's not very far down stream. This is another case of the Internet calling BS before they really know. Do a little research. I did, and this is a real problem that can happen in some motors.
Last two sentences weren't directed to you.

That bulletin was for alleged cylinder out of round on ANY engine... not just 3.6. It shows how to inspect for out of round condition and doesn't imply there is or has been a problem with this. Can't anyone read and comprehend anymore since the internet became popular? Nah, it's more fun to make up some dramatic bullshit.
Anyway- it really only happens on cars like the 2.4 front drive/awd where the cat is right on the short exhaust manifold.
There is no reason to think this is an issue.

If you don't think it can happen to the LFX, read the link I posted. Definitely seems more likely on a transversly mounted engine with cats bolted close to the cylinder head. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...=407151&page=3
