A clean record definitely helps. I was pulled over last year for doing 45mph on a highway onramp with a speed limit of 25 mph. After the usual pleasantries the first thing the officer asked me was "when was your last ticket", which was 6 years ago. As a young guy (25) this meant something I guess, he let me off with a verbal warning. Though it also may have been that he didn't know what the speed limit on the ramp was...he asked me what I thought it was and I responded 30 mph, he told me it was 20, I checked the next day and it was 25

Lawyer is definitely worth it, my one ticket I have received in my life I consulted a lawyer and a family friend who is an officer, using their advice I was able to get it dropped from 8 points to 3.

I've always said that speed "limits" should be strictly enforced - 40 mph speed limit means 41 gets you a ticket. At least then you would know not to exceed what is posted. Now, you're just guessing at how much you can get away with... depending on the mood of the LEOs on a given day. If an interstate posted speed limit is 70, there shouldn't be any drivers allowed to go 80 without being pulled over, but I see it all the time. In that case, raise the limit to 80 and ticket those going 81.

And so ends my rant.
+1. Hate that the trigger speed is a guess.

The speedo on my Yamaha FZ1 is nearly 10% off, and it's 100% stock besides a slip on muffler, the sprockets have never been changed and it's on the stock tires.

Granted, it's 10% off as in reading faster than what i'm doing, but obviously I know it's off so no way I would know if I was 1-2mph off in either direction really, I just assume 10% because that's what the internet says, but who knows exactly how far it's off.

If I went the speed limit according to my speedo on the bike i'd be getting run over, lol.

Same here. Now I at least get a court date and delay it as long as I can on hopes that the officer does not show. I've had the court delay on me and after six months I was able to ask for dismissal and they did.

If you want to play, you have to pay. Just drive like you enjoy it.

Within reason, I've learned to pick those times and always on roads I'm very familiar with and know all their hiding spots. Also, keeping an eye on cars making sudden moves into the left lane helps. I've had cops try to sneak up on me and saw them long before they could pace me (giving me ample time to slow down). The only ones I've been lucky to not encounter when going a bit too fast or just happen to casually drive by them at a reasonable speed are the unmarked cars. By time you see one of them it's because their lights are on pulling you over. Sometimes you can tell when it's an unmarked car, but not always. And if they're out for speeders they'll just cruise with the flow of traffic in the slow lanes until you blow by them.

I'm 5 years since my last ticket. Got tired of fines, courts, and fighting to keep tickets out of the speed category/off my license.
