How does this compare to factory performance mufflers that one can add on that can be bought through the GM catalog?

I had Flowmasters 40 series, drone at 1500-2000 rpm was so bad, I had the dealer who installed them take them off, the same day they were installed.

Like all Flowmaster systems, the benefits include improved throttle response, power and mileage. Designed for an easy fit, the system includes all necessary parts and hardware for easy installation.

✓ Mandrel bent 16 gauge 409 stainless tubing
✓ Aggressive and powerful exterior exhaust tone
✓ Includes hangers and hardware for easy installation
Dyno tuned for maximum performance
✓ Premium Flowmaster quality
They actually sound kind of crappy at high RPM until you add a Magnaflow Res. XPipe then you get a nice smooth deep sound.

You should have added a Magnaflow res. Xpipe with them. Its a whole different deep respectable sound.

This Flowmaster system is made of T409 stainless steel and is backed by a lifetime limited warranty to the original purchaser. This means that it will be the last exhaust system that you will ever have to buy for your car.

T409 stainless steel has a slightly higher iron content than 304(shiny) stainless steel. This makes it easier to weld, more durable, stronger and longer lasting than a 304 stainless steel, but because of that it will show light surface rust over time. This surface rust actually acts as a barrier to protect it from rusting completely through even under extreme conditions. Most major automakers recognize these benefits and currently use T409s for their OEM factory exhaust systems. If you would like to keep your exhaust system looking great for years to come, Flowmaster recommends that you either spray your entire system with a high temp paint/clear-coat or have it professionally coated prior to installation.

The mufflers in this Flowmaster system are not our off-the-shelf 40 Series originals. 40 Series Classic mufflers utilize Super 44 Series internals in a square 40 Series case. Generally speaking, the Flowmaster 40 Series original muffler is one of our most aggressive units whereas Super 44's have a deeper, richer tone and will not produce as much interior resonance as a 40 Series original.
