Looking into LT headers and high flow cats, all I have is a CAI. Do I need to get a tune if adding LT?

If you install LT headers and do not tune you will get a CEL. The CEL is due to the O2 sensor readings being messed up and you can still drive the car but we do not recommend doing that. Our advice is to wait in headers until you are ready to tune and wait to tune until you are ready to let your warranty go.

Can you turn off or hide the CEL for the rear O2 sensors with a Tech 2 or a similar tool that mechanics use? Or is the only option for turning off a tune?

I used a tuner (SCT) to shut off the CEL. While the needle happens to sit right over the light and hide it for the most part, it still annoyed the ^&*% outta me.

This, and any performance shop can do it as well. The dealership just isn't going to be much help.

Is this true for ALL brands of LT headers or are there some that don't throw the CEL? How about the Tri-Y style headers?

All long tube headers will throw a CEL. Sometimes it happens immediately, sometimes it happens a few miles down the road but it will happen

That is how they are marketed but in reality it is a coin flip. Sometimes they trip a CEL and sometimes they do not. The probability of a CEL coming up is too high for me to be able to tell a customer that it will not without feel like I am lying just to get a sell.

Can the CEL be turned off or does one have to spend the money for a whole tune. I have a M-6 and don't know what benefit I would get as opposed to an A-6 out of a tune. I am assuming a tune costs between 400-600 bucks, right? So that means if I were to put a set of Kook's LT headers along with the CAT pipes and a tune it would cost me over $2K. Wow. That's a lot.

Ah, for the good old days when you could slap a set of Hookers on with a shorty collector/glasspack dumping out the side of the car........that was cheap horsepower!!!

You can reset the CEL but without at least some tuning it will come back. The tuning will extract more power regardless of whether it is an auto or manual. It is similar to jetting a carb. You are optimizing the air/fuel ratios.

The Tech2 or any scan tool can clear a code for a CEL. A program like EFI Live or HP Tuners can turn off codes.

Clearing and turning off are completely different. Your GM dealer cannot turn off codes.

^^^^ This. I get a few calls now and again asking if we can turn them off. I can get my techs to use their stuff to clear the code but we can't tune out the rear O2 sensors, nor would we even if we could.
