Try mounting the core at the bottom. GM said that much more air passes through the lower grille than the upper. Worth a try at least.

Here is what I'm doing:
  • Ordered the bigger oil core with 50% more capacity.
  • I'll have quite a bit of extra hose as well. I'll try stacking up right in front of the condenser. If not, I might still install it where I did install the current one (but this one will go much lower due to much increased height).
  • Also ordered the heritage grill. It seems to provide much better flow.

sounds like a plan, there isnt much down low to mount to anyway.

Man I am shocked you are having such issues with oil temps with that big of a cooler. I am very curious what my oil temps will look like with my 2 pass cooler at NCM once I have the aftermarket gauges installed.

This is weird on your oil temps. My completely stock motor has never exceeded the third tick mark on the factory gauge (265F) here in TX. Is the factory gauge inaccurate?

Agree on the recommendation to mount lower. Everything I have read indicates the airflow is cleaner down there. That one change may make all the difference.

Do you have the factory tune? (Sorry haven't read your whole thread). Is the car running lean?

The factory gauge does not show more than 266 degrees F (unless you read from OBD2,), and it's also fake : (. I documented this experimenting with an aftermarket gauge here in my oil cooler install thread. Long story short, GM only shows the real oil temps with the dry sumped engines.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=381050

It has a tune from Florida Speed via inTune for my headers and CAI. The engine is stock otherwise in terms of power mods.

There are quite a few people hitting these temps, the rest just don't have a gauge and so they don't know.

The 2SS has the gauge pod that seems to be accurate. Mine will read well over the 266 seen on the DIC. The last couple track days I've been seeing the oil temps hovering around 300. Normally I wouldn't see that high and would be in the 280 range but that was when I was running 5/30. I think the discussion we've been having on oil weight playing a part in oil temps is what I'm experiencing. Have you had a chance to compare the 5/30 with your previous grade of 0/40 on the Camaro?

If you use OBD2 reader, you can also read oil temps beyond 266 degrees even on a 1SS (like mine), but at least what I've read was not accurate. After scratching my head since adding DeWitts radiator and even an external engine oil cooler did not make any impact to temps, I finally installed an oil temp gauge and realized that the temps diverge quite a bit. The temp readings I got from the car itself looks to be designed to 'guesstimate' the stock engine's temps.

Regarding engine oil weight, indeed I think that's what you're experiencing. 0W-40 increases temps quite a bit. I only did one track day with the 1LE this year, and that was with 5W-30. I did hit 297 degrees, and ordered a bigger oil cooler core after that, but I have no way of comparing numbers since my data from the former track days are at a different track with obviously different layout and more importantly, different altitude. I did compare oils on the Miata, however, and it seemed to have helped by 15 degrees or so when I switched to 5W-30. Different car, different (supercharger) engine, so I don't know how much would apply here.

Going back to the subject:
  • I am not absolutely sure about 2SS gauge pod, but considering you can easily add it to the 1SS (meaning they share oil temp sensor, etc.), I would doubt that it reads real numbers. I would highly recommend an aftermarket gauge.
  • Use 5W-30; it survives the track days, and runs the engine cooler. There is probably not even an HTHS viscosity hit, since you run cooler anyway.
  • My oil cooler parts will arrive on Wednesday, but I actually have a track day on Thursday, so the new cooler core won't make it. I will try it as soon as I can, though.

Makes sense, I'll look into a analogue gauge and see how much deviation there is from the cars gauges. As far as the oil, I'll switch back to 5/30 for the next track day and see how it effects temps, hopefully the weather with be similar to the last couple times. I've had labs done on the 5/30 and it holds up well so I don't have concerns running it. That was with Mobile 1, I'm sure there are better 5/30 oils suited to track/street duty.

The Setrab 48-Row, Series 9 Oil Cooler has arrived! Unfortunately, it will not make it to the Thursday track day since I will receive the remaining parts tomorrow, and will need to drive down to Portland tomorrow evening for the following day's track day. Oh well.

My hand is supposedly giving you a 'perspective of size' in this picture. As if you know my hand size...

The tire shop scratched inside of one my Z/28 wheels, so I put on one of my street wheelsto be able to move the car until it was fixed (well it's already fixed now). Anyhow, I took this picture before I put the Z/28 wheel back in:

On the left, Hankook RS-3 305/30/19 on 19x10.5" wheels, and on the right Trofeo R 305/30/19 on 19x11.5". When I measured with a plastic tape, the difference in actual tire width was also about 1"...

Will be curious to see your temps.

On a side note, I am wondering if the '14 front end affects temps. GM left the '13 front end on the ZL1, I thought I read for cooling. Since you have the earlier front end will be curious on your results

X25 - I think you need to mount the new cooler as low as you can to get clean air. BTW thanks for the wheel comments on the centering rings. I will likely get those wheels if I can fit in some track days this year.

My $.02 on oil is that 30 is fine, but you might want to consider a 10w-30 that has no viscosity improvers for track use. At least you won't worry about viscosity breakdown and there is normally higher ZDDP in these oils since they generally stop at API SL compliance. Some Amsoil 10w-30 (their diesel/gas oil states no vis improvers) or Mobil 1 high mileage. The diesel rated oil should have a nice additive package.
