Spoiler / Paint Issue on 2015 1LE

I have read some posts about issues from the spoilers being applied "too early", and as a result, there are paint issues on quite a few new Camaros. Well today, I washed the car...and noticed this....my first thought was it was possibly a sticker...but the more I look, it looks more like it is stuck to the paint under the spoiler. I don't think I've ever seen clear coat peeling up in such a fashion. Upon closer examination, there's some paint damage visible from the passenger side underside of the spoiler.

So I guess I was looking to see if anyone else had any stickers or labels or something lodged there?

And for those with the issue, did you take it to the dealer? Any issue getting the trunk lid re-painted?

2015 Camaro 2SS with RS package; 1LE; 2200 miles on the odometer.

Thanks,
Matt

People have been having issues with paint in the spoiler area since the cars came out in 2009. Search and you can find a lot. My 14 had a bunch of paint damage when i put a z28 spoiler on.

Like this on both sides and along the middle a little bit

Yep. Just did the Z28 spoiler myself and there was a fair amount of paint damage on my truck lid when I pulled my stock spoiler. I was really hoping that for some reason, that wouldn't be the case but, unfortunately, it was.

It is tough to tell from your pictures but what you may be looking at is the adhesive/plastic film that is bonded to the rubber gaskets (2 large and 2 small triangle gaskets on each end underneath the spoiler).
Last weekend I removed the spoiler to examine and clean under it (4K miles) and saw that some of the adhesive/plastic film was peeling off the gaskets. They also act like spacers.
There was also some scuffing off of the paint down to the aluminum in the area of the gaskets. What I discovered is that the dirt that accumulated under the spoiler near the mount points acted like an abrasive rubbing off the paint where clearance was not wide enough.

To fix I clear coated over the two small bare aluminum spots. Put on some clear Xpel film. Then used 3M double-sided tape/cushion under the original gaskets to add extra thickness. Will try to keep dirt from accumulating there in the future.

Created a thread with a little more detail that tells about spoiler removal. Some folks are getting dealer to repair bare spots via warranty. But, not sure if the dealer is doing anything to prevent same problem from happening again. That is why I tried my own solution, my concern was to catch it early before major problems.

Congrats on your new Carolina 1LE that will come in handy on the Tale Of The Dragon !!!

I had to go to two diff dealerships before I got satisfaction. I understand that GM is not my dealership but it's the only place we have to go to get things corrected. The first dealership I went to was the one I purchased both my Silverado and my Camaro from, talked with their Service Manager "Kid" and he had to contact their GM of after sales, he basically said "its out of site, out of mind" I called BS in that and told them GM sells accessory spoilers for the 14' Camaro and the accessory spoiler does not cover it, they basically said nope. So I went to a dealer ship 10 miles away and talked with their service manager and he never told me no, he spoke with three mechanics or techs and they all decided it was better to solve the issue, so.....

I just had mine repainted under warranty. I took off my spoiler to polish and check the spoiler rub after seeing the issues on the forums here. Went to the dealership and it was repainted in 3 days and I'm a happy Chevy Customer.

They wrap the spoilers in plastic to protect them during assembly and peel the plastic off later. I noticed some of the wrap under my spoiler when I took it off to install the Anvil Spoiler .

Negative, the Spoilers are painted separate from the car. The car is painted and before the paint has time to de-gas and fully dry the spoilers are installed. This is coming from a line worker.

Pull your spoiler if you haven't already and confirm if it is, in fact, paint damage. If it is take it to the dealership. It is covered under warranty. I just went through this myself. My local dealer basically refused to fix it. I took it to the dealer I purchased the car from (larger Houston dealership) and they took care of everything.

I did reach out to the Chevy Cust Svc rep here on C5. They opened a case for me and contacted the Houston dealer to tell them I'd be bringing the car in. I don't know if that helped me out any or not.

I've met two people local to me that both had theirs fixed under warranty.

Good luck.

So then what was the thin clear plastic film I pealed off the bottom of the old spoiler ? And I know that it was painted separately . Read what I originally wrote .

So, you remove the spoiler and want it repainted underneath where it doesn't show- then put spoiler back on?

As for OP- looks like the plastic film. I would think the dealer could loosen the spoiler and get that out of there and get .3 warranty time to do it as an 'adjustment'

My 2014 SS has a plastic film that was bonded to the 4 rubber gaskets in the area of the spoiler mounts. The film has strong adhesive on it that keeps the gaskets from sliding around on the spoiler mounts. Some of that plastic film (4K miles) had shifted out of place on my spoiler. Hard to tell from the OP pic but looks like same thing may have happened on his spoiler.

Just having a repaint done at the dealer, in my opinion, does not solve the problem long term for re-occurrence of the paint damage. Lots of debris collects under the spoiler (road dust, leaves, sand, etc.), the clearance is minimal on some parts of the underside of spoiler and rubs on the paint at highway speeds. I even saw some dirt and sand under the rubber gasket that was in contact with the paint right in area of the very small bare spots (exposed aluminum trunk metal). Another area where road dust/dirt collects is under the spoiler at the very back where it wraps around down on to trunk edge - all the way across - I added Expel film there as well since there is no spoiler gasket in that area.

To try and reduce the paint rub I increased the rubber pad thickness slightly, added Expel film, etc. as described in earlier post. Will not know if this technique will prevent or lesson damage to the paint until the next time I take the spoiler off for inspection. Did that preventive maintenance just prior to Camarofest since I was running on the NCM Course; and was anticipating high speed downforce causing the spoiler to push in to the paint more and buffeting from wind moving it around. There is also an area of factory installed soft foam pads placed in a rectangular shape on the bottom middle of the spoiler that can compress when downward force is applied.
