95' Goes forward in reverse and rolls in park when off.

Just picked up a my first Camaro. Its a 95 with the 3.4 Auto and t tops.

Rolls in park when off but not running,
Reverse is park when going from park to reverse, reverse goes forward when coming from the neutral spot.
No neutral (goes forward).

The center console in currently removed and was found jam packed with cigg butts (Now cleaned up).

Any run into this? Ideas what it could be? I was leaning toward shifting linkage but park works when running.

I am Briggs and Stratton MST so I can turn a wrench but I am just stepping into cars.

Thanks for your time and consideration on my issue!

Sounds like your shifter linkage is misaligned either at the center console or transmission. If someone doesn't beat me to it tomorrow, I'll post up the procedure on how to properly adjust it.

Thanks! I was hoping it was linkage. The power to the rear end in these cars are incredible! It went from "Part it out" to "This baby is getting fixed" in a .1 mile ride

From what I hear this was pristine up until the kid I got it from had it. He did this in 3 years.... It has a huge to fix list but if the foundation is solid....

Missing so much, my goal this year is to get it running and driving properly and to replace the windshield, driver door / guts, and Left T top. (It came with 2 rights lol)

Its going to be lots of work but I think well worth it (to me) once she is pristine again.

Both tires left trails on a mini burnout it was so fun!

Our 1st Camaro was a Burgundy 93 with the 3.4L. My wife hit a deer and they totaled it. We have a 94 Z28 now. If you were closer, I would give you some of the extra interior parts that we have. Good Luck with your project!

Now, I haven't had to adjust the linkage on my friend's 35th LE but here is what the manual call out to do.

ADJUSTMENTS
  1. Place transmission control lever in neutral position.
  2. Loosen cable attachment nut(s) or bolt(s) at shift lever.
  3. Rotate shift lever clockwise to park detent and then back to neutral position.
  4. Tighter cable attaching nuts or bolts to specification. Control lever must be held out of Park position when tightening nut.
  5. Check cable adjustment by rotating transmission control lever through each detent position.

Not sure if its similar to my Silverado but had the same issue. It was the neutral safety switch on the side of transmission the linkage cable runs to and indicates gears. I always noticed that when working properly the doors unlocked when put in park like they should. When it was acting up the doors always stayed locked when placing in park. The truck would roll if on a hill. I could crawl under it and manually move it just slightly to place in park. Please don't try while rolling. lol The switch can sometimes be adjusted or replaced obviously.
Maybe worth a look.

Well made a little progress tonight. I found where the shift linkage attaches on the bottom was missing one bolt and just had a loose one holding it in. So Tightened the one bolt I had (I'l grab another real soon) and park came back! Now Park is Park, Reverse is neutral... In between park and reverse is a spot where she goes forward, Neutral goes forward along with the rest D21.

My buddy was being a smart ass and pushed me around the driveway in the car with it off and I was going to be one back put it in gear (reverse through 1) and it rolled like it was in neutral.
I'm going to attempt to finish the cable adjustment tonight. I did notice lots of play on the tranny lever bushing.

Thanks for all of the support!

First put in reverse and try to rev if sound like it bogs or binds could be forward clutches welded together. That's one reason it pulls in neutral. It should bog or want to pull in park also

That makes 100% sense. I tried to rev it but couldn't get it to or pass 3000 it kept bumping it down... I thought it was a rev limiter of sorts This thing is getting out of control with what it needs. Thanks for all of the help! I might part it to save for my next in much better shape...

I really appreciate all of the help from you and all of the other members kind enough to take a few minutes out of there day to help this mower guy
