Ported LSA vs LS3 throttle body?

Hello,
I had a vmax ported throttle body on my 13ZL1 and traded it in for a 14ZL1 with recaros and a few other options. I was not able to keep the TB since I used the original as a core. I want to do a lower pulley 10% or larger, CAI, headers, tune, and maybe a cam in the future. Which TB would benefit me?
Thanks,
Travis

I am interested in this also.

I know a while back ADM Performance stated that an LS3 throttle body was a great upgrade for our cars. I am planning to purchase one at the same time I do my pulley upgrade.

I couldn't find any data on how much the vmax was ported. I was wondering if it was about a 90mm opening after porting.

I would assume the measurement of the opening is measured at the butterfly. Since this portion of the opening is not ported, I don't think it is a measurement that means anything. The portion of the TB between the butterfly and the intake tube is the portion that is ported and by the looks of the video, I would guess 1-2 mm of material is removed. More importantly it is done on a CNC and is consistent and perfect every time. Good throttle response, no HP gain. I would think if you port the snout, S/C and heads you would really have some good flow and throttle response.

Before I went with my Bo White ported LSA TB, I did a little research on it. Apparently, from what I gather, you'll likely need to tune to adjust for the air flow changes using the LS3 TB. If you're tuning anyway, so be it. But it doesn't appear it's strictly a bolt on and go. (And you'll likely need to flip it 180 anyway).

I haven't done it so I cannot verify first hand, but I'm not sure if the stock calibrations can adjust and learn the new TB or a tune would be required.

I did see where it would have to be inverted. I was curious if the ported LSA would restrict more than the LS3. No plans or porting the snout right now or I would go larger.

Hello Travis,

We get to play with this stuff all the time and I can promise you no gain until your at least 125 RWHP over stock then it is actually measurable.

We picked up a couple hundredths of a second at the track in back to back testing at this power level.

At 700 RWHP we picked up 20 RWHP from a Standard LSA to a Ported LS3.

So it is all about Demand vs supply of air, you need to have the demand before you can take advantage of the supply.

Ted.

LSA 87mm TB & LS3 90mm TB...bigger is better and a direct bolt on. Even unported, it is a cheap mod that is worth a few hp especially with pulley & air intake mods.

I only have a few mods...see signature below...and the Vmax TB made things worse...throttle was all over the place after I installed it...like JR said above..unless you 700+ hp don't bother..the stock LSA TB in our cars are fine.....if you have a SS or V6 then it's a must.

Now if you place on tuning then go for it!

If I were going to do an 18% lower, headers, CAI, injectors, and tune, would I be ahead to go ahead and do an LS3 throttle body? Or would I be better off to wait until I do more mods to it?

So while the extra LS3 flow is not significant is there any drive-ability advantages of say a ported LSA TB? Or are they only imaginary on a ZL1?

Having put 2 of them on different LS3s I have to say I am still not sure.

I imagine the LS3 gives you a little better throttle response.....

But no real HP or Torq gains until you hit higher HP #'s around 700.

I use unported LS2 silver blade 90mm throttle bodies on my ZL1's.
