What really made me notice this was the driver of the Subaru. I was sitting at the red light, on Sunday morning. Barely any traffic at all. I noticed, in my rear view mirror, he was approaching at a pretty good clip. About 200 yrds behind me, he darts into the that far right lane. Then, you could see.... he had second thoughts... slowed, and pulled back in behind me. It was funny because you could almost read his mind. I think it went like this "Uh oh, bad idea, better not try it this time."
I do notice that people will let me out if I am waiting to join traffic. I think they just notice the car a little more than regualr cars, so they wave you in.

Our cars bring out the "asshole" in a lot of other drivers. That's a fact!

This can be true as well. Where I live there are 2 v6 camaros. Even time 1 of them see me I'm my car they feel the need to spin the tires and take off like a shot. They don't even look my way. It's kind of embarrassing because I'm in the same car. It sometimes happens with other cars as well....I just notice those guys more because it's a camaro. I do notice that is someone is tailgating and I get on it......they fade back a bit because they can herar my loud nasty exhaust. I am very polite when driving my car....sometimes I think I surprise people.

If there's a road like the OP describes, and I happen to be at the front of the line, in any lane, I can practically guarantee someone will try and make a race out of it. Generally it's someone in a car that couldn't hope to accelerate at the rate an SS does. I rarely engage in it. I know how fast my car is, and I'm almost always going to "take the high road" in that sort of scenario. Yesterday while stopping for coffee on my way to work, with three open parking spots on either side of me, parked completely normally, within the confines of the one I was in, I had someone deliberately pull up to within six inches of my passenger side, and open their door into my car. No dent, but a small chip. (Like dust mote sized, put still a new hole in my paint.) He had the nerve to get shitty with me when I called him on it too. Don't get me wrong, the car gets a lot of positive attention, but it gets a lot of negative attention too. I see just as many people drive deliberately under the limit, pull out in front of me when there's a mile of clear road behind me, or park next to me when I park at the farthest end of a lot, as I do nice folks who make room, get out of the fast lane, or pay even a modicum of respect to the other drivers on the road. I take pains to drive in a polite manner, respectful of those living in the area, and generally not be "that guy." It generally doesn't matter, folks see a Camaro, and of those that care about it at all, it's about fifty / fifty respectful and nice, or rude and obnoxious. |

It just comes down to whether or not they think they can get ahead of you. That's all there is to it.

I think people have a respect for cars they perceive as nice or expensive. Part of it is that they want to look at the car but I think in the back of their mind they are scared to be responsible for damaging it because mama told them that if they break it they buy it growing up, lol. I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunities to drive a lot of really high end cars and people do not do stupid crap around them like they do if I am driving my wife's Chevy Traverse. People just do not cut of a Ferrari 458 or try to wedge in front of Bentley Continental GT in traffic. They tend to give you the right of way.

Yeah that happens with respectful people. When I'm stuck in that situation I try to give everyone a chance since I don't want to make it into a race; needless to say, moms, and people in hybrids, are the ones who always wanna speed past me. They probably go home and say "i beat a camaro in the street today". Lol.

If you really want to believe that then I wont take it away from you but sorry to say but no. There are more idiots than ever on the roads that have no respect for anyone on the highways especially when you see them texting while driving , this is a prime example of disrespect to other drivers who share the roads. Doesn't matter if I am driving my Camaro or daily driver I see just as many idiots every day . I have had some come upon me and try to play games while in the Camaro although I usually leave them far behind without doing anything but giving a little gas that's where it ends. I'm not about to risk destroying a $45.000 car that I busted my ass to own for some little pimple faced punk in his rice burner that thinks a car that sounds like a weed whacker is cool . Not worth my time.

Personally, if I have a chance to get around stopped traffic (I.e, open lane at a stop light) I take it. People out here take forever to get up to speed and it's irritating. That said, I do try to not be a dick about it. Honestly, the only time people actually let me do stuff is when they're forced to by lanes ending and stuff. I don't let people goad me into racing them or crap though.

The Subaru probably figured you weren't gonna let him jump in front of you so he might as well be behind you. Ive never noticed a difference between being in the camaro or the dd, there are people who drive courteously and people who don't either way

I agree. Do you think he'd have done the same if I'd been in my Ford Focus?

Interesting conversation. I am not what you would call an "aggressive driver", unless it's necessary due to some dumb ass who doesn't know what merge means (coming in from the right lane, usually). I drive by the rules of the road as I learned them 40+ years ago in Driver's Education. Using OP's scenario: if I am merging from a right third lane into two left lanes, it is up to me to blend in with the flow of traffic. If I have to slow down to do so - so be it. If I have to speed up to do so - all the better. If I am in that "middle lane" and cruising with the traffic flow, it's up to the right merging lane to either make a move or slow down to blend in. If they make a move to get in front of me, fine - just so long as they don't make me slow down when they do it.
Normally, with three lanes, I cruise in the middle at the speed of other traffic. If I see the potential for a right lane/middle lane conflict up ahead, I'm heading for the far left lane. The key is, I ALWAYS look ahead far enough to know what to do before a panic situation ensues. Most drivers don't do this - there-in lies the problem.
